About
Lake Louise
It is situated in Alberta, Canada in the Rockies region and is the ideal location for a luxury resort due to being in such an isolated area. Also known as the ‘Jewel of the Rockies’, this robin-egg blue lake most certainly lives up to its name. It attracts thousands of visitors every year, and some often return for a second look. The town of Lake Louise is situated approximately 5km from the lake itself. It’s a quaint little town with little more than a few shops, a petrol station and a few hotels, which tend to cost a lot of money - although seeing the lake for real can make the cost so much more worthwhile. Calgary International Airport is a two and a half hour journey from Lake Louise. You can either hire a car from there, or there are shuttle buses available to drop off at Banff National Park where the Rockies are located, or even Lake Louise itself. Banff National Park is Canada’s first National Park. You will find that 93 per cent of the park is untouched wilderness, which makes it that much more special. The first highway through the area was built in 1923, and this was when the tourism in the area really kicked off, and it has grown ever since. There are approximately 4,200 skiable acres across these mountain peaks, although you don’t have to come here just to ski. There are hostels scattered around the area, all with great access to Lake Louise and surrounding ski locations. The trick is to book early, as this is a very popular destination and places to stay get booked up quickly.
During your visit to this area of Canada, you must be aware of any Grizzly Bears. These magnificent creatures are often spotted here. There are advice lines you can call if you wish to check of any known sightings near where you are looking at staying. Less dangerous wildlife that you may spot around the Lake are moose, elk and deer, all of which will add to the surrounding views. Unfortunately, the moose population is on a decline and must therefore be treated with the utmost respect and left alone. Your Lake Louise holiday will most certainly leave you with a camera full of pictures. The breath-taking views of the mountains and large glacier will leave you snapping away as often as you can, so be sure to stock up on batteries before you leave. Lake Louise doesn’t tend to be ideal for those wishing to relax and unwind, unless the idea of outdoor activities and adventure is your way of doing so. The main attraction at Lake Louise is of course the lake itself. The colour of the water and the surrounding peaks are more than you can imagine. During the summer, canoes can be hired to enjoy the lake up close. Plus there are fishing trips available for those wanting to have a go. Each one of these mountains is ideal for skiing. This is the main activity here and is open to all ages and abilities, with guides in all areas ready to show the ropes and get you started on the slopes. There are also many Lake Louise tours available for single people, couples and families of all ages. Horseback riding is another option for those wishing to do so something more unexpected in a ski-resort area. There are plenty of restaurants dotted around the area offering all sorts of cuisine. You’ll be spoilt for choice after you’ve built up an appetite on the slopes. Unlike many destinations, it doesn’t matter what time of year that you decide to visit Lake Louise; you will still be served with a treat. During the winter it’s a world-class ski resort, while the summer turns the area into a beautiful sightseeing gondola with views for miles. However, July is the warmest month with an average temperature of 22 degrees C, this drops dramatically during January to a chilling -15 degrees C so don’t be expecting a sun-soaked holiday around then. One thing is guaranteed: regardless of when you visit, snow will cover the mountaintops, providing you with those outstanding views all year round.
