For unforgettable views of the country's striking landscape, choose to take to the skies and look over the island in a hot air balloon. There are a number of companies offering this experience around Sri Lanka, with many taking off from popular destinations, such as Dambulla. You’ll get unrivalled views of the tree-topped cliffs below, something you’re bound to never forget. Back on terra firma, you can head off on a mountain bike, exploring miles of trails through the island's forests where you can spot a variety of wildlife. The clear waters are ideal for snorkelling and diving, and when the surf's up you can ride the waves. Windsurfing, canoeing and many other water sports are there to enjoy, no matter your skill level.

Take the chance to try something new and sample the local cuisine outside the resort. Rice, fruit and spices are central to Sri Lankan cooking, making everything on offer incredibly flavourful. Curries are a mainstay, with a number of options to choose from. Whether you’re craving chicken or veggies, you’re sure to find a curry dish that tantalises your tastebuds. However, there are many other local dishes to try, including string hoppers or very thin noodles, and roti, a type of flatbread. Street vendors sell delicious treats though it's recommended that you avoid unpeeled fruit and salads. Tea is the main beverage chosen to accompany most meals, though there are plenty of alcoholic options if you fancy something stronger.

With a number of stunning World Heritage Sites, you’re simply spoilt for choice when it comes to attractions in Sri Lanka. Located atop a rock plateau, Sigirya Rock Fortress overlooks a vast jungle and is home to a mysterious 5th-century fortress. Alternatively, elephants are part of Sri Lanka's culture and allure, and the Millenium Elephant Foundation in Pinnawela is home to orphaned or abandoned elephants. Get up close to these beautiful animals in this sobering but ultimately uplifting experience. In the hill country, Nuwara Eliya is set among tea plantations and provides a cool antidote to the heat of the coast. This gorgeous flora covered landscape is waiting to be explored, plus you may be able to spot the native monkeys and birds that call it home.
