Itinerary

Day 1 (Durban via Johannesberg)

UK - Durban via Johannesberg

Morning arrival into Johannesburg before transferring to your connecting flight onwards to Durban.

From Durban international airport you will pick up your hired car and head out to the beachfront in Umhlanga which is only a 30 minute drive away where you will spend 2 nights.

Day 2 (Durban)

Durban

Your stay at the Oyster Box Hotel albeit short will be a memorable one. Its position is vital when it comes to enjoying the local area. Being right on the beach it is perfect for a day on the beach, the restaurants and bars are plentiful and are just a street away.

Durban is a bright and colourful city, so jump in the car and take a drive along the Indian Ocean and go to Ushaka Marine world where the aquarium has it all from Seal Shows and dolphin shows. The restaurants and bars are of great standard serving up a wide variety of cuisine.

Day 3 - Day 4 (Durban - The Midlands)

Durban - The Midlands

Heading away from the beachfront of Durban you make your way to the picturesque setting of the Midlands where you will spend 2 nights at a boutique property that complements its scenic setting.

With a vast amount to see and do in this area, take some time to plan your activities such as walking trails, fly fishing, canopy tours and visiting the capture site of Nelson Mandela

Day 5 - Day 6 (The Midlands - Drakensberg Mountain

The Midlands - Drakensberg Mountains

Enjoy your last breakfast at the hotel before setting off for your journey up into the Drakensberg Mountains where you will spend 2 nights taking in the breathtaking views of the highest mountain range in South Africa. Spend your days going on walks and viewing the highest concentration of Bushman paintings.

Just looking at the paintings will tell you a story of what it was like all those years ago. Depending on time of year you're even able to take part in Ice climbing when the winter sets in.

Day 7 - Day 9 (Drakensberg Mountains - Fugitives)

Drakensberg Mountains - Fugitives Drift

After a week of travelling through gorgeous scenery and taking in just a glimpse of what this magnificent part of the country offers, you find yourself at the centre of a historic gem. 


Fugitives drift will take you back to the time of the Zulu war and the brutal fight that went on that has gone into the history books as one of the greatest battles.

Day 8 (Day Tour: Rorke's Drift)

Day Tour: Rorke's Drift - Afternoon tour (3 hours)

The battle of Rorke’s Drift, 22nd January 1879. An account of this epic defence against impossible odds – an action in which 11 V.C.’s were won. Departs at 15:00 (winter) or 15:15 (summer). Guests have time to look through the museum at Rorke’s Drift before the lecture begins at 16:00.

There is very little walking involved. The lecture concludes around 18:00 and guests are then given the opportunity to look around the memorials and graveyard before returning to the Lodge and Guest House.

Day 10 - Day 11 (Fugitives Drift - Phinda)

Fugitives Drift - Phinda Game Reserve

On your last leg of your trip, you'll drive across to Phinda Mountain Lodge for 2 nights on a fully inclusive basis. The lodge lies within the 23 000 hectares of Private Game Reserve, in the Maputaland region of KwaZulu-Natal and approximately 3 hours’ drive from Durban.

Spend your morning and late afternoons on game drives in search of the big 5, alternatively head out on foot on a tracking adventure with your guide and tracker, or if you are the more adventurous type then you can opt to have a night under the stars and take in a star gazing lesson.

Day 12 (Phinda Mountain Lodge - Durban airport)

Phinda Mountain Lodge - Durban airport

As your adventure has come to an end, head down to Durban which is only a 3 hour drive from the lodge and drop your hired vehicle at the airport before catching your flight back to the UK.
