Unlike many of the other national parks that can be found in South Africa, the Pilanesberg National Park is not managed by South African National Parks. The stunning landscape is around 55,000 hectares, which makes the national park the fourth largest in the whole of South Africa. You’ll find typical African landscapes and foliage in the park, as well as more interesting and odd landscapes – for example, within the park there is a ‘dead’ volcano, which creates for fascinating views. It’s a fantastic alkaline complex, created from volcanic eruptions that occurred over 1,300 million years ago. Pilanesberg is proud to boast one of the largest volcanic complexes of its kind in the whole of the world, and even boasts rare rock types that are available in only very few, remote places of the world. Whether you just enjoy the view or you’re fascinated by geology, staying at the luxury Bakubung Bush Lodge will prove to be one of the most exciting places you’ve ever stayed in.

The dining at Bakubung Bush Lodge is just as luxurious. The resident Chef, John Wainwright, has had an exceptional career – catering around the country for a number of institutions. Since February 1997, John has been working with the Legacy Group, after having worked at the Kwa-Maritane bush Lodge for seven years before eventually joining the Bakubung Bush Lodge. Before this he has senior positions at five-star hotel resorts across Africa. John’s experience in African cities and small towns means that he has a wide range of catering experience, which can be seen in his food.
