Day 1 & 2 (Arrival & overnight in Chicago)

Chicago, IL - The Windy City

A city buzzing with energy and excitement, Chicago offers plenty for you to see and do from the very moment you arrive. Renowned for its architecture, this cosmopolitan city is packed full of restaurants, museums and enough shopping to keep you going for days.

Place of Interest: Why not take a river cruise through downtown Chicago to discover more about the history and culture of the ‘Windy City’? Head over to Millennium Park for a visit to Chicago’s iconic sculpture – ‘The Bean’. Or get yourself down to historic Navy Pier. Located on the shore of Lake Michigan, this lakefront playground is packed with over 50 acres of parkland, shops, restaurants and entertainment venues.

Day 3 (Chicago to Springfield, IL - 202 Mi)

Follow the footsteps of an American great!

Home to Abraham Lincoln, Springfield IL is the perfect place to stop off on your first leg of the iconic Route 66 road trip. Step back in time and discover how life once was at the pioneer village, and visit the world-class Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum.

Place of Interest: Around town there are plenty of local boutiques, art galleries and antique shops to rummage around for some hidden gems. Hungry? Make sure you try the local’s signature sandwich, the ‘Horseshoe’. For those with a small appetite, just ask for the ‘Ponyshoe’ – obviously.

Day 4 (Springfield IL to St. Louis - 97 Mi)

The Gateway to the West

From professional sports teams to river cruises, gardens to festivals, St. Louis has it all. Known as the Gateway to the West, St Louis is pack with things to do, see and explore.

Place of Interest: Why not leave the driving at home and take a tour of the Anheuser-Busch Brewery to sample some of their well known products, or take a look around St. Louis Cardinals Busch baseball stadium. Day 5 (St. Louis to Springfield, MO - 217 Mi)

The Birthplace of Route 66

Recognised as the birthplace of Route 66, Springfield, MO will forever have its place in the history books. Each year in August, the town plays host to the ‘Birthplace of Route 66 Festival’, with classic cars, food and good family fun.

Day 7 (Oklahoma City - Amarillo - 260 Mi)

Day 8 & 9 (Amarillo to Santa Fe - 279 Mi)

Santa Fe; A City Different

A City Different – welcome to Santa Fe. A visit to Santa Fe would not be complete without a visit to the Santa Fe Railyard. Once a key rails interchange in the early 19th and 20th century, the railyard is now a hub of entertainment, shopping, food markets and events.

Day 11 & 12 (Albuquerque to Flagstaff - 325 Mi)

Rich in Native American History

As you ascend further in to North Arizona, you will notice the scenery and climate start to change. A town rich in Native American history, Flagstaff is situated within the world’s largest Ponderosa pine forest, boasting magnificent views of the expansive woodland and mountainous alpine terrain. Flagstaff has long been a popular stopping point along Route 66 for many famous musical acts over the years. Many would stop by the ‘Museum Club’ to play a gig en-route to LA!

Place of Interest: En-route to Flagstaff, take a stop at Meteor Crater, a 1 mile wide scar in the desert caused by an ancient astronomical collision. When leaving Arizona into Nevada, you will pass over the Colorado River at the Hoover Dam. A stop well worth making!

Santa Monica is officially the ‘End of the Trail’ so no Route 66 road trip would be complete without a visit to Santa Monica Pier. LA has 75 miles of sunny coastline so if its sand between your toes you’re after, Santa Monica has it covered.
