As one of several buildings on Porto’s waterfront to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 16th century origins of Pestana Vintage are well protected, and the hotel is all the better for it. Though the original building speaks for itself, there are more than a few surprises once you walk through the front door. As such, surprisingly modern, art deco touches work perfectly with 500-year-old stone pillars, guestrooms feature marble and glass-clad bathrooms while food in the hotel’s fine dining restaurant is as good as anything to be found in 21st-century Portugal!

The Pestana Vintage Porto Hotel offers something slightly different when it comes to luxury city centre hotels. Some of the furniture to be found in the various categories of guestroom and suite is - although high quality - relatively modest, something which allows the focus to be placed on the beauty of the building itself and, of course, the enviable Douro River or Plaza views which lie outside your window. That said, wall murals and state-of-the-art bathrooms are brave additions, ones which work perfectly well, as do the vintage stylings found throughout the lobby, bar and superb restaurants spaces. Sitting on the historic harbourfront in the thick of the action, means that all the sites of Old Porto are quite literally on your doorstep, so if the beauty of the building, the fine finish to the décor and world-class food served onsite is not enough, then Pestana’s unbeatable location surely will be.

Carnivores will delight at the RIB Beef and Wine restaurant, where a spread of high quality, succulent meats keep bellies and palates sated. There’s everything from Tomahawk Irish Black Angus, to Chateaubriand and Rib Eye, as well as delicious options for vegetarians including mushroom risotto, all best rounded off with an irresistible dessert. There are also tapas dishes at the hotel’s Heritage Bar, should you feel like a taste of local fare along with a glass of Douro wine or port.

Though the hotel has less than 50 rooms, there are in fact ten separate categories to choose from. One or two of the suites do enjoy a larger floorplan and extra space, but the main difference between each option is its location and subsequent view. All enjoy quirky wall-murals, immaculate, glass-walled bathrooms and plenty of mod-cons, so - if at all possible - the river view and balconied guestrooms are well worth the extra investment, for their unforgettable views across the harbour, particularly at night.
