Travel Tips & Advice for Sossusvlei

Sossusvlei Activities

You’re in the desert, so what should you do? Climb the dunes of course! One of the most famous, easily accessible and photographed is Dune 45 but there are plenty of others to scramble up and down. For an aerial view, take to the skies on a hot air balloon ride – we think adding on a champagne breakfast puts the experience over the top! There’s also eco-sensitive quad biking and guided drives or walks to spot desert-adapted wildlife.

Sossusvlei Food & Drink

In the middle of the Nambi Desert, dining options and local cuisine is a little on the scarce side in Sossusvlei. You’ll find that many of the camps and lodges operate on an All Inclusive basis, providing you with three meals every day. Dining is often done by lantern or even starlight with sundowners round the boma, delicious braais (barbeques) in the evenings and picnic lunches put together while out on game drives.

Sossusvlei Attractions

Surreal, otherworldly, lunar-like… all describe the white clay pan of Dead Vlei. Surrounded by dunes, the cracked white earth contrasts with the dark 900-year-old camel thorn trees. Lesser-visited but no less Instagram-worthy is Hidden Vlei, head here for a little more solitude. And if you have extra time on your trip into Sossusvlei, we recommend stopping off at Sesriem Canayon, an 18-million-year-old gorge that is one of the few places on earth to hold water year-round.
