Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge has just eight cottages built from volcanic rock, offering spacious interiors with specially commissioned African artwork and toasty fireplaces kept aflame by personal butlers. The main lodge with its high ceilings, exposed wooden beams and picture windows is a phenomenal place to relax and soak up the incredible views over the treetops towards the mountains and the Virunga volcanoes of Rwanda and even as far Congo where the orange glow of the Nyiragongo Volcano can be witnessed on a clear evening.
The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to a population of 330 mountain gorillas – nearly half the world’s population – and is the only forest in Africa where both gorillas and chimps co-exist. Tracking the Nkuringo gorilla family, the largest and friendliest of Bwindi’s five human-habited troops is a one-in-a-lifetime experience. There are also five other primate species, 113 mammal, 200 butterfly and 360 bird species as well as a herd of forest elephant to be found within the forest. Please note that while kids are welcome at the resort, children under the age of 15 years are not permitted to visit the gorillas.
