Languages in Saint Vincent: English is the official language spoken on Saint Vincent, while many locals also speak Vincentian Creole, which is a mix of English, French, Spanish and Portuguese formed by the island’s West African slave population and their descendants.

When to Visit: For lower chances of rain, the best time to visit Saint Vincent is between February and April when the weather is dry and warm. The wet season runs from May until September and rewards travellers who don’t mind the occasional tropical downpour with excellent value for money.

In and around Saint Vincent’s vibrant capital, Kingstown, you’ll find a number of exciting attractions. These include the St. Vincent Botanic Gardens, the bustling Kingstown Market and the historic Fort Charlotte which stands guard over the city. Elsewhere on the island, the active Soufriere volcano is Saint Vincent’s highest peak, offering panoramic vistas. Dark View Falls is a stunning cascade whose crystal-clear pool you can swim in, and the Vermont Nature Trail rewards hikers with the opportunity to glimpse the national bird, the St. Vincent parrot. For a cultural fix, come during carnival season and join the frenetic Vincy Mas festival with its parades, music and cultural events.

Saint Vincent Food and Drink

Saint Vincent’s national dish is roasted breadfruit and fried jackfish, a tasty combination of fresh seafood and starchy fruit. Other island favourites include callaloo soup, made from callaloo leaves, okra and coconut milk; roasted pork dishes; stewed chicken and bammy, which is a flatbread made from cassava. Notable beverages to be found across the island include the locals’ favourite, Piton Beer, plus interesting options such as sea moss smoothies, conch water, sorrel-based drinks and mauby, a traditional Caribbean beverage made from the bark of the mauby tree that is often sweetened and spiced.

Saint Vincent Activities

Some of the most popular activities for travellers in Saint Vincent include snorkelling and scuba diving in the astoundingly clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, where kaleidoscopic coral reefs teem with exotic marine life. Another popular pastime is hiking up the Soufriere volcano for panoramic views across the island. Some hotels and tour companies offer sailing excursions around the island and further afield, enabling you to glimpse this veritable paradise from the water. The St. Vincent National Trust Museum details the island’s history and culture across the centuries, from its indigenous populations to Columbus’ landing to the horrors of the slave trade.
