New Schengen entry requirements (planned for November 2024 onwards)

From November 2024, the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) will start for all non-EU nationals, including British nationals, travelling in or out of the Schengen area. The Schengen area is made up of 29 European countries, 25 of which are EU Member States. The EES is a digital border system which registers non-EU visitors travelling into the Schengen area instead of stamping their passports.

You will need to have your fingerprints and your photo taken when entering the Schengen area. If you enter the Schengen area through Dover, Eurotunnel at Folkestone or St Pancras International, your fingerprints and photo will be taken before you leave the UK. You will also need to provide either your fingerprint or photo on exit.

You may experience longer queues at borders when the new system starts.

Passport Validity

To enter Europe, your passport must have:

a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it may have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago

an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave

at least one blank page for stamping

Trying to decide which activities to do while staying in Europe is no easy task, but there really is something for everyone. For lovers of the outdoors, skiing and snowboarding in the Alps is a bucket list activity, while walkers and hikers will appreciate visiting the area in spring or summer when meadows are full of wildflowers and walking trails open up. You can hike fjords in Norway, walk the ancient walls of Dubrovnik, or climb the Eiffel Tower. It’s all waiting for you in Europe.

Europe Food & Drink

Food and drink in Europe is as varied as the continent itself, with each country and region showcasing their own specialty. Paris is famous for its café culture, with croissants and coffee as well as haute cuisine. In Italy, you can feast on pizza, pasta and gelato with deliciously fresh seafood found up and down its wonderful coastline. Hunker down in a traditional pub in Dublin or Edinburgh, while meatballs are the meal of the day in Sweden, and a Pilsner is a must in Prague.

Europe has more places to visit than you could possibly hope to in one trip with each and every one a wonderful destination in and of itself. Wander the canals of Amsterdam and stop off at the famous Rijksmuseum and Anne Frank’s house. Take in the wide boulevards of Paris before heading out to Versailles or Monet’s house in Giverney. In Berlin, be sure to visit the famous wall while also taking in the bars and cafes of cool Kreuzberg or go to Greece for the Acropolis and the Parthenon.
