Take to the road through this remote and stunningly beautiful region.
Journey into the Wild West of Wyoming and the Dakotas on
this thrilling trip through America’s Rocky Mountains. Visit iconic Mount Rushmore, witness the bursting geysers of remote Yellowstone National Park, see a rich Native American heritage and
discover the cowboy culture that has shaped this captivating region.
UK to Denver
Fly into the Mile High City, a picturesque metropolis
surrounded by the stunning Rocky Mountains, and spend a night before collecting
your motorhome.
Denver to Cheyenne
Wyoming’s capital city is an intriguing mix of frontier-town and a modern city. Stroll through the city centre and visit the Wyoming State Museum. Here the region’s history is traced from pre-historic times, through the Native American tribes that first inhabited the area to the more recent history of cattle driving and exploration.
Distance approx: 102 Mi
Time to travel approx: 1 hour 35 minutes
Cheyenne to Wind Cave National Park
Your first full day of driving hits the long, straight roads
of Nebraska. Zip through this prairie state where the expanse of flat, featureless landscape is itself a spectacle to behold. Cross into South Dakota and arrive at your campground near the intriguing Wind Cave National Park. Our suggested campground is basic, with no power hook-ups, but sees wild deer and
buffalo visiting regularly and offers fantastic night sky views. Visit Wind Cave National Park with its incredible natural phenomena like strong barometric
winds and boxwork cave walls.
Distance approx: 250 Mi
Time to travel approx: 3 hour 50 minutes
Wind Cave National Park to Mount Rushmore
Today it is a short drive through the Black Hills to the
iconic Mount Rushmore. Marvel at the faces of presidents Washington, Jefferson, T. Roosevelt and Lincoln, gazing out eternally across this immense landscape. Lesser known but only 30 minutes’ drive away is the under-construction Crazy Horse Memorial, well worth a visit, to commemorate this Lakota tribe warrior.
Distance approx: 37 Mi
Time to travel approx: 50 minutes
Mount Rushmore to Devil's Tower
Today’s journey takes you back into Wyoming, through a land that has been the setting for many a Wild West movie. Travel through the town of Deadwood, the setting for much of Dances with Wolves, before arriving at spectacular Devil’s Tower, made famous by Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The Devil’s Tower Campground is within sight of this geological oddity.
Distance approx: 125 Mi
Time to travel approx: 2 hours 20 minutes
Devil's Tower to Cody
Set off early for your drive west and take the scenic northern route through Bighorn National Forest, stopping at the intriguing Medicine Wheel, an ancient point of gathering for the native Crow people. Arrive into the cowboy town of Cody where you can discover the Buffalo Bill Historical Society.
Distance approx: 309 Mi
Time to travel approx: 5 hours 15 minutes
Cody to Yellowstone National Park
Continue westward, through the remarkable Shoshone Canyon, to the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park. This remote expanse of wilderness is home to an amazing array of wildlife from wolves and coyotes to moose and buffaloes. The Grant Village Campground lies inside the park and is open from approximately late June to late September. Spend a day exploring this wonderful and varied national park. Visit the Old Faithful geyser which shoots boiling water high into the air as regularly as clockwork; discover Grand Prismatic Spring, where algae changes the colour of the water from blue to orange, green and red; then visit Yellowstone’s twin waterfalls, one of which is twice the height of Niagara.
Distance approx: 77 Mi
Time to travel approx: 1 hours 40 minutes
Yellowstone National Park to Colter Bay Village
Leave the mighty Yellowstone National Park behind and move on to the less well known but still spectacular Grand Teton National Park. We recommend the Colter Bay Village campground, a lakeside retreat with awesome views toward the peaks of Grand
Teton.
Distance approx: 62 Mi
Time to travel approx: 1 hours 30 minutes
Colter Bay Village to Lander
The stark landscape of the great divide basin sits in sharp contrast to the peaks and forests of the national parks you are leaving behind. These are the traditional lands of the Shoshone and Arapahoe tribes and they still live in this region today. Finish today in the town of Lander at the welcoming Sleeping Bear RV Park.
Distance approx: 140 Mi
Time to travel approx: 2 hours 30 minutes
Lander to Laramie
The railroad town of Laramie has long been a staple of Wild West folklore and still today visitors can see the classic frontier architecture of the storefronts in downtown Laramie. En route, detour into Medicine Bow National Forest for gorgeous mountain vistas.
Distance approx: 223 Mi
Time to travel approx: 3 hours 30 minutes
Laramie to Fort Collins
Make a side trip to the Medicine Bow National Forest before heading south and back into Colorado. Fort Collins is a delightful town with a great restaurant scene as well as easy access to an array of outdoor sports.
Distance approx: 65 Mi
Time to travel approx: 1 hours 10 minutes
