Famed for its stunning beaches it is no surprise that water sports are extremely popular: from sailing to kayaking, to snorkeling and scuba diving at the rockier headlands. If you prefer your feet on solid ground then the varied nature of the countryside is waiting to be explored by foot, bike or even horse. Sardinia has a long tradition of horse riding with stables on practically every corner. For nature lovers, Sardinia is on the main migration route between Europe and Africa so is a haven for birdlife.

Sardinia Food & Drink


The island’s Mediterranean cuisine with plenty of traditional offerings will be left spoilt for choice. Although an island the locals consider themselves more ‘shepherds’ than ‘fishermen’ and many dishes are based around grilled meat, salamis, bread, cheese and olives. The theme is simple, natural and light however the most typical dish of su porcheddu roast suckling pig can be found all over the island. Although Sardinian wines are not well known outside Italy, they are well worth a try!

If you can drag yourself away from the pristine beaches the island has a lot of fascinating sights. Archaeological remains can be found all over the island including nuraghe - mysterious stone towers which are dotted everywhere and fascinating to explore. Off the Costa Smeralda in the north are the beautiful Maddalena Islands where many beaches can only be reached by boat. The Roman ruins of Tharros and Nora also mustn’t be missed and if you have time the historic marina town of Alghero is worth a visit.
