Takayama Private Full-Day Tour

On a full-day tour in Takayama, you’ll start by visiting the city’s bustling morning markets. Known as Asaichi, there are two markets held daily during the morning hours, selling local crafts, vegetables and farm products – a place where locals flock to barter and trade.

You’ll start at the more modern of the two, operating since the early 20th century, before making your way to the older one, which originated in the early 19th century. With both markets located near Takayama’s evocative old town, this is a wonderful area to stroll, sampling delicious cuisine and admiring the traditional Japanese architecture.

During your walk, you’ll stop at Takayama Jinya, an old provincial magistrate office and the only one of its kind in Japan whose main building remains standing. Used as a government office for nearly 300 years, it ceased operating 50 years ago. Towards the end of the tour, you can stop by a local sake brewery and try some jisake, a local variety of sake crafted in one of Takayama’s breweries.

Disembarking in Kanazawa, you’ll make your own way to your hotel in the city before enjoying the rest of the day to explore or relax at your own will.

You’ll meet your local English-speaking guide at your hotel before heading to one of Japan’s most treasured gardens: Kenroku-en. The garden’s name refers to the perfectly aligned aesthetics of these stunning grounds, including seclusion, spaciousness and abundance of water. Get lost in the tranquillity of these blissful gardens as you take in the meticulous landscaping, peaceful ponds and mellifluous waterways.

You’ll then continue your guided wander to Omicho Market, Kanazawa’s largest fresh food market. Here you can browse a large variety of goods in this vibrant space that has operated for almost 300 years. Wander past the affectionately named ‘Kanazawa’s Kitchen’ before continuing on to Kazue Machi, one of the best-preserved tea house districts. Here you can try your hand at one of the traditional crafts that Kanazawa is famous for: gold leaf embellishment. Roll up your sleeves and learn how to decorate a lacquered plate with intricate gold leaf, crafting yourself a unique souvenir in the process.

Finally, you’ll walk to the neighbouring Higashi Chaya, the largest preserved Geisha district in Kanazawa. Explore the Shima Teahouse, converted into a museum, and explore the beautiful details of this space that has maintained its traditional style, observing the costumes and musical instruments used by Geishas to entertain their patrons. Day 9: Kyoto

Kyoto Private Full-Day Tour

Explore Japan’s former imperial capital in the company of a knowledgeable local guide, utilising Kyoto’s excellent bus system to visit some of the city’s famous World Heritage Sites.

You’ll begin at Kinkaku-ji Temple (widely referred to as the Golden Pavilion), whose top two floors are coated in glistening gold leaf. The temple was originally built as a retirement villa for the Shogun but, at his own request, became a Buddhist temple following his death. Next, you’ll make your way to Nijo Castle, an ornamental fortress built by the founder of the Edo Shogunate which lies encased by serene gardens. The castle is famous for its period architecture, decorated sliding doors and ‘chirping’ nightingale floors.

Then head to Heian Shrine, constructed on the occasion of the 1,100th anniversary of the capital’s foundation in Kyoto and dedicated to the spirits of the first and last emperors who reigned from the city: Emperor Kammu and Emperor Komei.

Finally, you’ll visit the breathtaking Kiyomizu Temple, where you can admire both its 13-metre-high veranda as well as stunning panoramic views across Kyoto. Learn about the fascinating history of this iconic Japanese building, including how both the main hall and veranda were built entirely without the use of nails or any other form of joiner.

Day 12: Hiroshima

Hiroshima Private Full-Day Tour

Journey through Hiroshima’s ancient and recent history on this unique full-day tour across the ‘City of Water’.

In the morning, you’ll meet your guide before transferring by public transit to the Memorial Peace Park, Hiroshima’s tribute to its tragic war-era past and hope for the future. Then visit the Peace Memorial Museum, whose poignant exhibits display photos and artefacts from the atomic bombing and its aftermath. Despite the harrowing nature of the subject, the museum is not aimed at being divisive or placing blame but instead served as a reminder for us not to take peace for granted.

After the museum, you’ll have some free time to enjoy lunch before riding the train to the ferry, which will cross you to the shore of Miyajima Island. This picturesque island is an ancient holy site and a sacred national treasure of Japan that features beautiful Shinto shrines, Buddhist pagodas and temples and charming Edo-style walkways for an insight into ancient Japanese culture.

You’ll arrive at the main complex, Itsukushima shrine, a family Shinto shrine founded in the 6th century. At high tide, it appears as though it is floating above the water, along with its ‘floating’ torii gate, the iconic Otorii, one of the most photographed structures across Japan.

You’ll have plenty of time to explore the island, passing tame wild deer who roam freely. You can visit Daisho-in, a Buddhist temple with a trail of hundreds of happy Buddha statues and stop at the charming souvenir shops in the town. You can also try some of the local delicacies; the island has farmed oysters for over 300 years, and another culinary option here is maple leaf castellas filled with a red bean paste, a classic snack that is unique to the island.

After exploring the delights of the island, you’ll return to the mainland and head back to your hotel.

Accommodation: Hotel Granvia Hiroshima (or alternative hotel of equal standard).

INCLUDES : Breakfast

Day 12: Hiroshima

Day 13: Osaka

Journey to Osaka & Osaka City Tour

Board the bullet train from Hiroshima after checking out of your hotel and make your way to neon-soaked Osaka, known primarily for its contemporary architecture, vibrant nightlife, exquisite street food and the 16th-century, moat-and-park-encircled, shogunate-era Osaka Castle.

In Osaka, you’ll head out on a walking tour to explore the delicious local foods and main attractions of the city. You’ll travel to Shinsekai, or New World District, where you can sample the local specialty, Kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers). Shinsekai was built in 1903, with half of the area drawing inspiration from Paris and the other half inspired by New York’s Coney Island.

From Shinsekai, you’ll venture on to the Namba area to take some pictures at Osaka’s most famous landmark, the Glico Man neon sign. In the area, you’ll head to Honzenji Yokocho, famous for its moss-covered statue in the centre of an alleyway where your guide will instruct you on prayer etiquette. Day 15: Hakone

Hakone Private Full-Day Tour

In the morning, you’ll be met at your hotel by your guide and commence a full day of exploring Hakone National Park, which lies in the shadow of the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji.

Throughout this scenic tour, you’ll have glimpses of this awe-inspiring active volcano, provided the weather is clear. To transport yourself around Hakone, you can take the cable car from Gora Station to the Hakone Ropeway, soaring above the active volcano site Owakudani, where you can observe steam rising from the mountain, whose rugged slopes conceal bubbling thermal water.

Stop amongst the steaming rocks before trying kuro-tamago, or black egg; boiled in sulfuric hot springs, each egg turns black as it’s cooked, with this local delicacy purported to add several years to a person’s lifespan.

Descending the mountain via ropeway to Togendai, you’ll board a piratical-style ship and sail across the tranquil waters of Lake Ashi, the remnants of a crater formed by a volcanic eruption nearly three-thousand years ago. While sailing this spectacularly scenic lake, you can enjoy views of the peaceful, forest-clad mountains that surround Lake Ashi, with Mount Fuji looming in the distance on clear days. Included in your tour is entrance to the Hakone Open Air Museum, one of the must-see sites in the area.

Please note that there may be quite a lot of walking during the tour, so it is recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes.
