Whatever you do in Tokyo, don’t leave the city without spending time shopping – even if it’s just through the windows! Head to Harajuku to check out the latest fashions modelled by groups of schoolgirls or Akihabara for electronics. Explore the novelty-kitschy side of Tokyo as you drive the streets in a go kart dressed as Mario characters (yes, really!) or grab a group of friends and head to a karaoke box – it’s a national pastime. Our top tip? Don’t plan everything… leave extra time to simply explore what’s going on right now.

Tokyo Food & Drink

While Tokyo famously has more Michelin stars than any other city in the world, that doesn’t mean you can’t eat well for less. As a city obsessed with food, you can always find something that fits your budget and taste buds! Filling noodle and rich dishes can be found at casual eateries around train stations while many of the city’s restaurants specialise in just one or two dishes with menus often created based on what’s been bought from that markets in the morning. And though sake and beer are popular drinks-of-choice, there are a growing number of whisky and scotch bars.

When it Tokyo take the opportunity to discover the city’s history and heritage at one of the many museums – we love the Tokyo National Museum with its collection of samurai swords, kimonos and Japanese artwork. Learn the importance of tradition and religion in Japanese culture with a visit to the Meiji Shinto Shrine – one of the country’s most popular - or Sensoji, the city’s oldest Buddhist temple. And if you’re craving a day surrounded by greenery, head to Ueno Park, an expansive green space with ponds and temples.
