With over 1,000 coral islands sprinkled across 26 atolls, the Maldives is a destination that truly offers a world of its own. But here’s the secret: no two islands are quite the same. At Best at Travel, we’ve spent 40 years exploring these turquoise waters to hand-pick a collection of resorts across the most iconic atolls, ensuring there is a perfect island for every type of traveller.
Whether you’re looking for an exclusive luxury sandbank where the only footprints are yours, or a larger, action-packed island with enough facilities to keep the whole family entertained, the choice is vast. From the remote reaches of the northern atolls to the vibrant reefs of the south, your Maldivian adventure starts with finding the island that speaks your language.
Choosing where to stay in the Maldives starts with finding the right atoll. Discover the atolls our travellers love most, from world-renowned diving capitals to secluded honeymoon havens, and find the perfect match for your next island escape.
It depends on your holiday style! Baa Atoll is the top choice for nature lovers and snorkelers, while South Ari Atoll is unbeatable for diving. For those who want the shortest travel times after a long flight, the North Malé Atoll is often considered the best choice.

The Maldives is an archipelago located in the Indian Ocean, southwest of Sri Lanka and India. It stretches across the equator, meaning you’ll enjoy tropical warmth and sunshine year-round.
Because each resort typically sits on its own private island, travel is part of the adventure. Depending on your chosen atoll, you will travel via speedboat (ideal for the Malé Atolls), seaplane (for a scenic 30-45 minute flight), or a domestic flight followed by a short boat ride.
The easiest islands to reach are those within the North Malé Atoll. Resorts here are reached by a quick speedboat transfer from the airport, meaning you can be on the beach and in the water within minutes of arriving.
South Malé Atoll sits directly below the North Malé Atoll, separated by a deep-sea channel. It is located very close to the capital and the international airport, making it a popular choice for those who prefer a speedboat transfer over a seaplane.
The island of Hulhulé houses the airport itself. The closest resort islands are found in the North Malé Atoll, with some islands, such as Kurumba Maldives, located just a 10-minute boat ride away.
North Malé is the original home of Maldivian tourism and offers a huge variety of established luxury resorts and surf breaks. South Malé is generally a little quieter and is famous for its "kandu" (channel) diving.
