A pinprick volcanic island off the east coast of
Mauritius, Rodrigues is a Mauritian territory rising out of the
Indian Ocean's aquamarine waters. Ringed by shallow waters rich with coral and marine life, the island is home to pristine beaches leant over by verdant palms, making it a quintessential Indian Ocean island escape.
On the island's northern end, the capital Port Mathurin is home to charming French and British colonial architecture, including the former governor's 19th-century residence. In the southwest, rare Rodrigues fruit bats flit through the canopies of the François Leguat Giant Tortoise and Cave Reserve, named after an 18th-century French explorer and naturalist. As the reserve's name suggests, it is also home to a population of two endemic species of giant tortoises, which can be glimpsed lumbering through the undergrowth and grazing on the abundant vegetation.
