Day 1: Muscat

Arrive in Muscat

After arriving at Muscat’s international airport, you will be greeted by a local representative and transferred to your chosen hotel in the comfort of a private, air-conditioned vehicle.

Located between rugged mountains and the glittering waters of the Arabian Sea, Muscat is the Sultanate’s capital city, home to a distinct cultural heritage and ancient maritime history, its coast-hugging quarters punctuated with relics from Persian, Portuguese, Ottoman and Omani periods of rule.

After checking into your hotel, you’ll have the rest of the day to spend at leisure and unwind after your journey. Alternatively, you can choose to embark on an optional Twilight Dhow Cruise, drifting across the lustrous waters of the Gulf of Oman aboard a traditional dhow boat. On this three-hour excursion, you’ll be able to glimpse the Muscat coast through the eyes of the ancient mariners who plied this route for centuries, stopping briefly at a natural cove and enjoying views of some of Muscat’s most prized landmarks.

Muscat City Tour

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before departing at approximately 08:30 for a revealing guided tour of the Omani capital.

First, you’ll visit the magnificent Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the largest mosque in Oman and a stunning feat of modern Islamic architecture. Accommodating up to 20,000 worshippers, this grand, marble-clad building features an interior adorned with an enormous, 21-ton Persian carpet and a 14-metre-tall chandelier that glitters with some 600,000 Swarovski crystals.

Next, you’ll proceed to the Royal Opera House, Muscat’s nucleus of music, arts and culture. Afterwards, you’ll explore the historic Muttrah area, famed for its bustling Muttrah Souq which dates back two centuries and is scented with all manner of exotic spices. You’ll also visit the Bait Al Zubair, a private museum boasting a stunning collection of Omani artefacts, before heading to Al Alam Palace, one of Sultan Qaboos’ royal residences and the Mirani and Jalali forts, each built during Oman’s Portuguese occupation during the 16th century.

Day 3: Jebel Akhdar

Jebel Akhdar Trail

After breakfast, your driver will collect you from your hotel and drive you towards Nizwa, an ancient city in Northern Oman which sits on a broad, mountain-fringed plain swathed in palm plantations and scored by seasonal rivers.

In Nizwa, you’ll visit the 17th-century Nizwa Fort, a domineering Arabesque fortification built to protect the city’s flourishing trade. You’ll also stop at the Nizwa Souq, an authentic open-air marketplace that has stood for centuries and throughout which local artisans and traders flaunt their unique wares. The souq provides an excellent opportunity to mingle with the welcoming locals and barter for a souvenir.

After Nizwa, you’ll continue to the picturesque village of Birkat Al Mauz, where you can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the lush green date plantations. You’ll then be driven to Wadi Al Madeen, a dry riverbed and the starting point of the 36-kilometre-long road which winds up the dramatic mountain landscapes to Jebel Akhdar (Green Mountain), which rises some 2,000 metres high amid the rugged topography of the Al Hajar mountain range.

While in and around Jebel Akhdar, you can enjoy the cool climate of the mountains, exploring the terraced fruit orchards which descend the mountainsides along with the natural springs which sprout across the area. You’ll also stop off at some of the small, stone-built villages that lie scattered throughout the mountains, including Saiq, Wadi Bani Habib (an eerie, abandoned village), Roos and Al Ain.

After examining the breathtaking landscapes of Jebel Akhdar, its plummeting canyons and oasis-like wadis, you’ll stop for lunch at a local restaurant before making the return journey to Muscat.

Day 4: Wahiba Sands

Explore the Wahiba Sands

In the morning, you’ll depart your hotel for the three-hour drive to Wahiba Sands, an expansive area of undulating, rust-red dunes rising up to heights of 200 metres in eastern Oman. Home to a variety of flora and fauna – including Arabian oryx, sand gazelle, foxes and wildcats – the ever-changing patterns of the dunes as they ripple towards the horizon form a stop-you-in-your-steps vista.

You’ll visit a traditional Bedouin house amid this stark wilderness, learning how this ethnic group lives and their unique customs. In contrast with the smooth desert dunes is the Wadi Bani Khalid, whose clear blue water shimmers in the sunlight and next to which lie small villages embedded within the rugged mountains.

During this excursion, it is advisable to wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes; for swimming in the wadi, both men and women should wear a T-shirt and knee-length shorts.
