Day 2: Lima

Half-Day Lima Colonial Tour & Gold Museum Visit

After breakfast, you’ll be collected from your hotel to discover the Peruvian capital’s captivating colonial history and heritage. A vital hub during the Spanish conquest of South America, Lima was the political, religious and economic capital of the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru after being founded by Francisco Pizarro in 1535.

First, you’ll visit the beautiful Metropolitan Cathedral of Lima which faces the lively Plaza Mayor. From the Plaza, you’ll also be able to see the ornate architecture of the Government Palace and the Municipal Hall before driving through the city’s old streets to glimpse traditional colonial-era mansions and charming Moorish-style balconies.

Afterwards, you’ll stop at Casa Aliaga, a colonial mansion granted in 1535 by chief conquistador Francisco Pizarro to one of his captains, Jerónimo de Aliaga. In fact, this is the only residence in Lima that still belongs to the same family through all the centuries; seventeen generations of Aliagas have lived in Calle del Hierro Viejo since the city’s founding.

You’ll then stop for lunch at Mayta, a contemporary Peruvian restaurant and pisco bar, before continuing to the Gold Museum, where you’ll be immersed in a superb collection of gold artefacts from numerous pre-Hispanic Andean civilisations. After exploring the fascinating displays at the museum, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel before savouring a sumptuous dinner at Central restaurant, one of Lima’s most prized restaurants.

Day 3: Sacred Valley of the Incas

After breakfast, you’ll be transferred to the airport to board your flight to Cusco, a historic city located in the Andean Highlands that was once capital of the formidable Inca Empire.

Once you land in Cusco, you’ll meet with your driver at the airport and transfer to your hotel in the Sacred Valley, an area of fertile landscapes pockmarked with extraordinary relics of the Inca Empire as well as traditional Quechua villages, markets and agricultural terraces.

After checking in, you’ll enjoy lunch at Huayoccari, one of the most emblematic haciendas in the region that is owned by the Lámbarri Orihuela family and offers stunning vistas of the valley. After lunch, you’ll learn about the sustainable agricultural practises used here that have transcended generations.

Following lunch, you’ll transfer back to the hotel and enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure, providing you with an opportunity to relax and acclimatise to the Andean altitude.

Day 4: Sacred Valley of the Incas

Chinchero, Moray & Maras Archaeological sites

Embark on a full day of exploring some of the treasures of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

You’ll begin in Chinchero, a quaint traditional village that is home to a weaving community. You’ll see a workshop where you’ll be given a presentation on how the local artisans use natural products including plants and minerals to produce the vivid colours synonymous with Peruvian textiles. You’ll also meet Nilda Callañaupa Alvarez, whose organisation, El Centro de Textiles Tradicionales de Cusco, inspires young Peruvians to embrace their heritage weaving techniques as both modern art and a means of commerce.

Afterwards, you’ll head to the Maras Salt Mines, which have been used since long before the Incan era. The extraction method here involves using an ancient drying process: saltwater, flowing from an underground stream, is deposited into thousands of wells until it has evaporated, leaving behind only the salt.

Next, you’ll continue to Moray, a spectacular Inca-era archaeological site where enormous terraces form a circular depression in the hillside, constructed so that the temperature difference between the highest and lowest can be as much as 10 °C. Moray is believed to have been an Incan agricultural experiment to adapt crops to different microclimates, showcasing this advanced civilisation’s innovative agricultural methods.

You’ll then enjoy a meal at Mil*, a delicious restaurant serving flavoursome dishes prepared using authentic ingredients from across the surrounding Andean landscapes. Afterwards, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel to enjoy a restorative wellbeing experience.

Accommodation: Las Casitas Del Arco Iris (or alternative hotel of equal standard)

Day 5: Machu Picchu

Travel to Machu Picchu Aboard the Vistadome

After breakfast, you’ll be transferred to the nearby train station to board the Vistadome to Machu Picchu, one of the world’s most remarkable and iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The train will depart Ollanta at approximately 08:53 and arrive in Aguas Calientes at approximately 10:29.

During the train journey, the carriages' panoramic windows reveal startling vistas of the passing Andean landscapes, a mishmash of fertile farmland and towering mountainsides.

Once you disembark, you’ll visit the fabled 'Lost City of the Incas'. Machu Picchu had lain abandoned in the heavens for four centuries until American explorer Hiram Bingham happened upon it in 1911. Machu Picchu is believed to have been built in the 1450s by Inca Emperor Pachacuti as a retreat. A guided tour explains the origins behind this awe-inspiring citadel and the most prominent landmarks among the 200 or so buildings such as the monumental Main Square, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Circular Towers, the Sacred Sun Dial and the Burial Grounds.

After exploring the wonders and mysteries of Machu Picchu, you’ll transfer to your hotel in time for dinner.

Day 7: Cusco

Sacsayhumán, Korikancha Temple of the Sun & San Blas Artisans

In the morning, you’ll be collected from your hotel to begin a day of exploring Cusco’s most impressive historic sites.

Your first stop will be Sacsayhumán, a formidable Inca fortress built across three overlapping platforms; the innovative construction of this impressive structure saw the Incas perfectly slot huge, meticulously cut stones together without the use of mortar. Sacsayhumán served as the most sacred ceremonial complex of the Inca Empire, while also having been used as a military and astronomical centre.

Next, you’ll explore Cusco’s historical Inca and Spanish colonial monuments including the Plaza de Armas, known in Inca times as Huacaypata or ‘Warrior’s Square’; this now bustling centre was the key scene for many of Cusco’s most important events.

You’ll then continue onto the Church and Convent of Santo Domingo, a Spanish-built religious structure belonging to the Dominican Order and constructed upon the foundations of a former Inca temple of Koricancha or the ‘Temple of the Sun’. Koricancha was the primary religious building of the Incas, dedicated to worshipping the Sun, and whose walls were allegedly plated with shimmering sheets of gold.

Day 9: Amazon River Cruise

Cruise the Amazon River

On your first morning, you will appreciate one of the most important zones of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Never does nature seem more bountiful than in the tropics, and early rising is always rewarding since wildlife is most abundant and active with the rising of the sun. The early morning hours are the best time of day to watch birds, observe their special displays and listen to their songs. You will jump on the skiffs and head to this area with large trees and old palm trees as well, these components favour the presence of several parrot species. This particular spot also has a great number of other birds of different species. You will look for the famous hoatzins nesting a few feet above water, and perhaps a sloth or two of the three-toed kind.

You will have the opportunity to get to know Carola. She is a spiritual caretaker and healer to literally hundreds of jungle dwellers spread over many roadless miles. Her prestige and position are beyond reproach. The role of shaman is often misunderstood in the west, associated with black magic, and spells. While these things all have their place, the actual practitioners are as varied as in any profession. Carola is known as a “White” shaman, a healer and spiritual guide.

You will start cruising through the Yanayacu and Pucate Rivers, peeking into different creeks and lagoons. This is one of the best preserved and protected zones of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Your guide will use his expert eye to pinpoint all the biodiversity of this region. If you want to interact directly with the waters of the Amazon, go out on one of our kayaks or paddle boards. You will even have the opportunity to spot the famous pink dolphins!

After dinner, you will enjoy a night safari on Nauta Caño.

You will take advantage of the calm waters to fish the famous piranha and learn more about this curious fish.

On your visit to this community you will be welcomed by smiling faces and friendly people. Around the community, people who are happy to show you the process of peeling and grating cassava, while another may invite you in for a look at the tools he uses to process the rice (grown locally). A day in the life of a local ribereño is eye-opening to how far you have come in this day and age and a reflection of how simple yet rewarding life is for others.

The walk at Fundo Casual jungle trail will take you deep into the rainforest on terra firme (non-flooded forest) where your guide will point out the dynamic creatures and vegetation of the Amazon. Be sure to keep an attentive eye open for spotting surprises! Its almost unbelievable how with every step you find something along the way. Almost definitely Anaconda, Rainbow Boas, Tarantulas, Poison Frogs, and most recently porcupines have been spotted. This is one of the very few places in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve Amazon Rainforest where you will spot the ever so elusive two-toed sloth.
