Visa Information: UK visitors to Saudi Arabia must acquire a travel visa either before travel or on arrival to Saudi Arabia.

Time Difference: GMT +3.

Languages: The national language of Saudi Arabia is Arabic. Due to the country’s young population, you will find English is also widely spoken.

Getting Around: Hiring a car is the fastest and most efficient way of getting around Saudi Arabia. Buses are operational within major cities, which are also connected by rail, while taxis and ride-hailing apps are also a useful option.

Alcohol: Saudi Arabia is a Muslim nation, and the consumption of alcohol is strictly forbidden throughout the country.

Clothing: While travellers are not required to dress the same as Saudis, they are encouraged to wear clothing that covers the shoulders, arms and legs to be respectful of the local culture.

When to Visit: The best time to visit AlUla is between October and March to avoid the sun when it is at its strongest. Temperatures still remain warm though can drop during the evenings, so be sure to pack accordingly.

AlUla Attractions

AlUla’s main attractions are its incredible historical sites, from the ancient rock-cut tombs of Hegra to the labyrinthine alleyways of the AlUla Old Town. There is also the city of Dadan, former capital of the Dadan and Lihyanite kingdoms where tombs stud the rockfaces. Additionally, there are the spectacular rock carvings of Jabal Ikmah, which include the ancient languages of Dadanitic, Aramaic, Safaitic, Thamudic, Minaic and Nabatean. Another attraction is the striking Elephant Rock, a 52-metre-high natural monolith whose shape evokes an elephant.

AlUla Food and Drink

While staying in AlUla, you can sample a variety of traditional Saudi dishes, including kabsa, mandi and jareesh. Also, plenty of places will serve Middle Eastern mezze dishes that include things like falafel, tabouleh, and hummus. Popular drinks including a Saudi staple, Arabian coffee, which is infused with warming spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg and saffron, giving it a rich golden colour.

AlUla Activities

Along with visiting the numerous historic sites around AlUla, other activities include some of the region’s festivals. These include the eye-catching AlUla Skies Festival, where the sky brims with colourful hot air balloons which soar over the sprawling desert landscape. In winter, the AlUla Arts Festival takes place, where towns and wadis are adorned with beautiful art installations. You can also hike throughout the rugged desertscape to gain jaw-dropping panoramas, while stargazing is an utterly awe-inspiring experience due to the low light pollution in the desert.
