They don’t make hotels like Raffles Singapore anymore. An icon for over 100-years, this legendary grande dame is well-loved for its mixture of gracious service, 19th century soul and enhanced comfort, all done the ‘Raffles way’. In the centre of the city, liveried Sikh doormen have welcomed big names from Charlie Chaplin to Elizabeth Taylor and while there is more than a sense of splendour, guests are also made to feel at home, thanks to cosy social spaces and gorgeous all-suite rooms with butler service. It re-opened in August 2019 following a two-year refresh where everything from the white-on-white paintwork to the plumbing were updated, though much remains the same: afternoon tea with homemade scones is served in the lobby, the rooftop swimming pool commands stunning views of the Singapore skyline and – of course – The Long Bar is still serving its classic cocktail, the Singapore Sling invented in the very same bar in 1915.
