Day 5: Rovos Rail

Depart From Cape Town

After checking out of your hotel, you'll enjoy a private road transfer to the Cape Town train station to board the luxurious Rovos Rail for your four-day journey through the heart of South Africa.

Rovos Rail's traditional train carriages are all 1920s originals, rekindling the nostalgia of a bygone era in African exploration. While onboard, you'll be able to indulge in sumptuous meals and excellent fine wines while enjoying the charming décor, and make use of the train's comfortable lounge and observation deck.

The 1 600-kilometre route is a perfect illustration of South Africa as a world in one country. Travel the grasslands of the gold-rich Highveld to the haunting barrenness of the Great Karoo; trundle through the spectacular mountain ranges and scenic winelands of the Cape. Highlights of the route include a visit to the historic village of Matjiesfontein; this authentic perfectly preserved Victorian Village – founded by Mr Logan as a refreshment stop in 1890 – also boasts an impressive museum on the platform. Another stop is made in Kimberley providing an opportunity to enjoy a city tour and a visit to the Diamond Mine Museum and the world’s largest man-made excavation, the Big Hole.

After departing Cape Town at approximately 16:00, the train will trundle through the picturesque winelands of the Western Cape towards Worcester while tea is served in the lounge and observation cars. Later, dinner will be served in the dining cars as the train climbs 750 metres up the face of a dramatic escarpment that offers sensational views across the surrounding landscapes.

Of special interest here are the museum on the station platform and a collection of classic cars and railway carriages on display beside the Lord Milner Hotel.

Climbing back aboard Rovos Rail, the train will continue its route through the Karoo, a vast semi-desert region that was once an enormous inland sea. Lunch will be served in the dining car at 13:00, and at 16:30 you can enjoy tea in the lounge and observation cars while soaking up the passing scenery. Dinner is served at 19:30.
