Set on Spain's southeastern Mediterranean coast, Alicante combines a lively seaside atmosphere with historic streets, elegant promenades and a backdrop of rugged hills. The city is the capital of the Costa Blanca and makes an appealing base for discovering the region, while its compact centre means many of its highlights can easily be explored on foot. At its heart is the palm-lined Explanada de España, a sweeping waterfront promenade of distinctive marble mosaic paving, lined with cafés, restaurants and bars.

Dominating the city is Santa Bárbara Castle, perched high above Alicante on Mount Benacantil. Dating back centuries and shaped by successive Moorish and Christian rulers, the fortress provides panoramic views across the city, harbour and Mediterranean. Below it, the old quarter of Santa Cruz is a maze of narrow lanes, whitewashed houses, colourful flower-filled balconies and small squares, offering a quieter and more atmospheric side to the city.

Alicante also has an appealing beach culture. Postiguet Beach stretches alongside the city centre, making it possible to combine sightseeing with time beside the sea without needing to travel far. Further along the coast, the marina and waterfront are filled with yachts, restaurants and places to stop for a drink, while the nearby island of Tabarca makes an enjoyable day trip for swimming, snorkelling and exploring its historic village.
