Royal Botanic Gardens & Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
In the morning, you’ll visit the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, home to more than 4,000 species of plant – including orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees - over 61 hectares. These gorgeously manicured gardens were originally established in 1371 when King Wickrambahu III ascended to the throne and kept court at Peradeniya. The gardens were later developed by Alexander Moon in 1821, who used the grounds for growing coffee and cinnamon plants, and were formally established in 1843. Later, during World War II, they were used as the headquarters of the Southeast Asia Command under Lord Louis Mountbatten. They were also used as a location in David Lean’s epic 1957 movie The Bridge on the River Kwai.
Afterwards, you’ll visit one of Buddhism’s most sacred sites: Kandy’s Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which houses the relic of the Buddha’s tooth. Held in an intricate two-storey shrine fronted by large elephant tusks, the relic is kept within a glimmering gold-lotus-flower casket. In the temple, you may also trace the fascinating story of how the tooth relic was smuggled into Sri Lanka from India in 371 A.D.

At Leisure
For the next four days, you’ll be free to unwind and disconnect along Sri Lanka’s beautiful south coast. At your tranquil boutique hotel, comprising just 10 elegant, ocean-facing rooms, you’ll be right by the beach and will be able to enjoy the hotel’s sumptuous gastronomy as well as its 20-metre outdoor pool.
Should you wish to venture away and explore the area, you can visit Galle Fort, which was first established by Portuguese settlers in 1588 and heavily fortified by Dutch colonists during the 17th century. More than 400 years old, Galle Fort remains in remarkably preserved condition, and its sturdiness was proven when it withstood the catastrophic effects of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, which devastated much of Sri Lanka’s southern and eastern coastline. Within the fort, you’ll find beautifully preserved Dutch architecture including churches, monuments, ramparts and warehouses used by the Dutch East India Company to store spices. Perhaps its most famous landmark though is the Galle Fort Lighthouse: the current lighthouse was constructed by the British in 1939 some hundred metres away from the site of the original lighthouse, destroyed by a fire in 1936, which had been erected by the British in 1848.
