Day 1: Mae Hong Son

Chiang Mai – Mae Hong Son

Enjoy an early breakfast at your hotel before meeting with your local guide at 08:30 to embark on the scenic drive towards Mae Hong Son. The picturesque route passes along winding roads through Northern Thailand’s breathtaking jungle-cloaked mountains and the awe-striking landscape of the Pai Valley, a broad expanse of lush green rice fields hemmed by mountains and bisected by the meandering Pai River.

En route, you’ll stop at a local orchid farm where vividly coloured orchids adorn beautifully manicured gardens, and a butterfly enclosure houses numerous species of butterfly which flutter freely around you. You’ll indulge in a delicious lunch at a local restaurant in Pai before continuing by road to the submerged Fish Cave, where local villagers honour mountain-dwelling spirits by leaving large freshwater fishes undisturbed in a mountainside pool, believing that catching them would bring bad luck.

Take in the fresh countryside air before entering Mae Hong Son and checking into your hotel, before spending the rest of the day at leisure.

Please note that the total driving time from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son is approximately 6 hrs, covering a distance of 250 kilometres.

Kayan Village Visit & Boat Cruise on the Pai River

After breakfast at your hotel, you’ll meet your guide for an excursion that unveils Northern Thailand’s distinct ethnic groups and incredible natural scenery.

Admire the captivating views of the rolling mountain ranges, lush green plains and fertile forests that surround the riverbanks as you navigate the countryside in a nimble pick-up van perfectly suited for the narrow rural roads. Passing through a swathe of jungle, you’ll reach one of Northern Thailand’s hill tribe villages, located just five kilometres from the Burmese border and home to the Kayan and Kayaw ethnic minority subgroups.

Referred to widely as the ‘long-neck women’ for the brass spirals that adorn their necks - making them lengthen - the Kayan are refugees from Myanmar (formerly Burma). Numerous theories exist as to why the Kayan women wear these spirals, including preventing them from being sold into slavery, their aesthetic appeal, and as a protective measure against tiger attacks.

After meeting with members of the tribe in their village and hearing stories of their unique culture and heritage, you’ll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before embarking on a scenic boat trip along the Pai River, taking in the lush scenery as you drift gently along the tranquil waters.

Day 3: Mae Sariang

Temple Visits, Pha Bong Hot Spring, Thai-Japan Friendship Memorial Hall & Kaeo Komon Cave

Following breakfast, you’ll check out of your hotel and head to the southern end of Mae Hong Son town to explore the Burmese- and Lanna-style temples.

The first stop is Wat Jong Klang, which houses hundred-year-old glass paintings and wood carvings from Burma, vividly depicting numerous facets of the Buddha’s life. You’ll then visit Wat Phra Dhat Doi Kong Moo which, on clear days, affords glorious views over the sleepy, mountain-hugged town of Mae Hong Son. If lucky, you may be able to enjoy a conversation with the resident Buddhist monks, with your guide on hand to help translate any queries you may have about life in a monastery and their daily rituals.

After exploring the temples, you’ll be driven the short distance to the Pha Bong Hot Spring, a serene, natural geothermal spring secluded amidst the forested mountainsides. Here you can choose to bathe in the mineral-rich waters or instead opt to take a leisurely walk through the surrounding forestry.

Next, your driver-guide will continue along the highway to the Khun Yuam distict, where you’ll stop off to visit the Thai-Japan Friendship Memorial Hall, which shines light on Khun Yuam’s role as a Japanese base during World War II, housing an impressive collection of weapons, military equipment and personal belongings left behind by Japanese soldiers.

You’ll then travel on to the Mae La Noi district, an off-the-beaten-path destination that retains its purity. There are a number of authentic hill tribe villages of both Lawa and Karen tribes scattered throughout the mountains and lowlands. These traditional settlements, rarely glimpsed by tourists, retain their cultural essence and reveal how these tribal groups live their daily lives.

After stopping for lunch at a local restaurant, you’ll continue to Kaeo Komon Cave, considered by many to be the most beautiful calcite crystal cave throughout Thailand. Divided into five chambers, you can traverse the cave’s connected corridors, admiring the glittering crystals adorn its walls.

Once you’ve explored this mystical crystal cave, you’ll meet back up with your driver-guide and continue towards Mae Sariang, where you’ll check into your next hotel.

Day 4: Chiang Mai

Ob Luang National Park, Ban Huai Kung Village & Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

After breakfast, you’ll check out of your hotel and set off to Ob Luang National Park, whose most notable feature is the dramatic, 1,000-foot-long Op Luang Canyon that has been carved out of the rock by the Mae Chaem River.

En route, you’ll stop at Ban Huai Kung, a charming Karen village nestled within an ancient forest. With just 10 households, the village sustains itself through freshwater fishing, game hunting, rice farming and gathering natural products from the forest.

After exploring this remote village and meeting its friendly inhabitants, you’ll stop for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing to the ancient city of Chaing Mai, once capital of the Lanna Kingdom which existed in Northern Thailand between the 13th and 18th centuries. In Chiang Mai, you’ll first check into your hotel before, at around 16:00, heading out into the city to enjoy its enchanting ambience during the evening.

The highlight of this guided tour is a visit to the resplendent Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, believed to have been originally built in the year 1383. The temple’s astounding beauty is most evident in its seven-headed serpent statues that line the steps to the temple, where a golden pagoda with its magnificent Lanna architecture is situated. Set at an elevation of 1,050 metres, the site of the temple also offers astounding vistas over Chiang Mai and its surrounds.

You’ll reach Chiang Rai Province around noon, savouring an authentic local lunch en route. You’ll then switch to a pick-up truck vehicle adept at navigating the narrow mountain roads, taking you to Doi Mae Salong where you can enjoy truly breathtaking views across the mountainous countryside.

Between November and February here, you can delve into the culture of the Chinese descendants of the KMT Nationalist Chinese Army Regiment at their village, Santikhiri. The mountain is also home to a number of hill tribe villages; near the mountain’s peak are several picturesque tea plantations draped across the slopes.
