A 10 night itinerary including 3 nights in Mexico City, 3 nights in Merida & 4 nights at Riviera Cancun. Mexico is an extraordinary country that has been fascinating visitors for a long time; this varied tour will uncover two astonishing cultures – the Aztecs and the Mayans. Start in the high-altitude, highly-populated capital, Mexico City, then move to the flat jungle terrain of the Yucatan peninsula, before ending at the dazzling white sandy beaches around Cancun.Arrival in México
Meet and greet at México City Airport. Transfer to your hotel, located close to Paseo de la Reforma which was inspired by the Champs Elisée of Paris. Driving time approx. 40 minutes
Once the capital of the Aztec empire, México City has pre-Columbus archaeological sites, outstanding colonial monuments and world class museums.

Guided Tour of México City
Today the guided tour of México City visits major attractions, starting where it all began, at the Zocalo – seeing the National Palace with an extended series of mural paintings that show a graphic illustration of the country’s history painted by renowned artist Diego Rivera. Moving on to the Metropolitan Cathedral, the oldest and largest cathedral in Latin America, intended to distract the Aztec people from their previous beliefs and convert them to the new religion. Behind here view the Tenochtitlan Templo Mayor ruins which were part of a large ceremonial centre of the Aztecs (the Templo Mayor represented the cosmic centre of the universe.) The tour is completed at the incredible National Anthropology Museum, the largest of its type in the world.
Days 2 and 3 can be interchanged for anyone arriving on a Sunday in to Mexico City as the Anthropology Museum is closed on Mondays.

México City Highlights Continued (including Teotihuacan Pyramids)
After breakfast, take a guided excursion to the outstanding Teotihuacan Pyramids, starting with a visit to the Virgin of Guadalupe Shrine (a church which is a place of pilgrimage for millions) before reaching the famous ancient archaeological site north of the city. Teotihuacan was the Toltec-Aztec ceremonial centre and the site is as impressive as the Egyptian pyramids. The monumental buildings were constructed by Toltecs who were an advanced culture dominated by the Aztecs; hi-lights include the Quetzalcoatl Temple and the fortress, the largest monuments of their type in the world.

México City to Mérida
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for a morning flight to Mérida (approx. 1hr 45 mins), Founded in 1542 on the indigenous trace of Ichcaanziho, once one of the biggest cities in the Mayan territory. After checking in at the hotel, which is located in the historic quarter, enjoy an afternoon tour of this fascinating city, noting the architecture, colonial charm, it’s full of Spanish and French influences and has palaces, quaint narrow streets and romantic horse-drawn carriages. The colonial heritage has been preserved in the historic district and the Plaza Grande (central square) is surrounded by ancient buildings such as the San Idelfonso Cathedral the most antique church of the American continent. Mérida is also a hub for artisans and showcases traditional crafts and products including intricate embroidery. The rest of the day you’re free, no doubt ready to make use of the hotel’s pool before heading out for the evening for some shopping and to sample some amazing local cuisine.

Fascinating Mayan Sites of Kabah and Uxmal
After breakfast depart for Kabah which flourished around 800 A.D. and its main attraction is the Palace of the Masks with over 250 faces of the rain god Chac. Kabah is connected with Uxmal by a ‘sacbe’ (Mayan road) and Uxmal’s architecture is amongst the most impressive in the Yucatan region. Meaning three times built, Uxmal is situated within a series of hills known as the Puuc and comprises of horizontal palaces placed around quadrants richly decorated with detailed sculptures and is enveloped by legends & myths. Hi-lights of this lesser known site include the Pyramid of the Magician (once the home of a leprechaun!) and the Great Pyramid. Uxmal is remarkable and provides a wonderful insight into the Mayan culture. After a lunch break return to Mérida, where there’s another chance to enjoy an evening in this charming city.

The Natural Beauty of Celestun Biosphere Reserve
After breakfast, there’s a visit to Celestun, a typical fishing village and ecotourism paradise with freshwater springs, extensive mangroves, salt flats and beaches, a wetland reserve home to over 300 species of birds including ibises, egrets and the blue heron plus the main attraction – thousands of pink flamingos. A boat tour is included which reveals The Drum (a peaceful flamingo lagoon). There’s time for lunch at one of the authentic seafood restaurants along the beach. Return to Merida, to enjoy time at the hotel’s comfortable amenities or head out and about one more time around captivating Mérida.

Incredible Experience of Chichén Itzá + Cancun/Riviera Maya
After breakfast, there’s a 2 hour drive to the Mayan’s sacred city: Chichén Itzá, voted one of the Modern Seven Wonders of the World and at one time the most powerful city of the Yucatan. Discover the incredible cenotes; underwater sinkholes nourished by underground rivers, supplying clean water. Known as the mouth of the well, Chichén Itzá was a commercial area, ceremonial place and spiritual site. Arguably the best Mayan pyramid is found here, the Castle (el Castillo). Amongst the other impressive structures, there’s an astrological observatory, Temple of the Jaguars and the Temple of the Warriors. Following lunch, there is a 2½ hour drive to the Caribbean shoreline of the Riviera Maya, where you will reach your selected beachfront hotel for a few days of relaxation and to continue enjoying the Mexican hospitality.
