Discover Borneo's natural bounties over 10 days on this invigorating and experiential touring holiday. Beginning with two nights in Kota Kinabalu, where you can relax and de-stress, you'll head into Malaysian Borneo's lush interior to encounter rehabilitated orangutans and sun bears before journeying up the Kinabatangan River to spend two nights in the jungle. With river safaris and jungle walks, you'll have the chance to encounter species including wild orangutans, proboscis monkeys and abundant birdlife. Your Bornean adventure will conclude with five nights on the tropical shores of Gaya Island, situated within a protected marine reserve and blanketed in pristine rainforest.

Day 1: Kota Kinabalu

Arrive in Kota Kinabalu

Arriving in Kota Kinabalu, you will be greeted at the airport by a local representative and transferred to your hotel in a comfortable private vehicle, a journey of approximately 1 hr.

After checking in, the rest of the day is yours to spend at leisure. Take some time to enjoy the hotel's luxurious facilities or savour some respite at the onsite spa.

At Leisure

The day is yours to do as little or as much with as you like. You could choose to take to the pristine waters that surround the island of Borneo with a choice of water sports.

Or you could head further afield and explore the diverse flora and fauna around Kinabalu Park, one of the first nature reserves in Malaysia to be designated by UNESCO. Towering over the park is the jagged peak of Mount Kinabalu (4,095m), the highest mountain on Borneo and across Malaysia.

Alternatively, you could simply relax and enjoy your hotel’s wealth of facilities and activities.

Day 2: Kota Kinabalu

Day 3: Lower Kinabatangan-Segama Wetlands

Fly to Sandakan, Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, Wildlife Cruise, Night Walk

In the early morning, you’ll check out of your hotel and proceed to the airport via private transfer, where you’ll board your scheduled flight to Sandakan.

Arriving in Sandakan, you’ll reconvene with your driver and proceed to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, a journey of approximately 30 mins. At the rehabilitation centre, you’ll have the opportunity to observe these gentle, rehabilitated primates being fed before walking through the forest to the nearby Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, where sun bears are rehabilitated within a 2.5-hectare enclosed environment.

After visiting these two rehabilitation centres and getting close to two of Borneo’s most iconic species, you’ll be driven to a jetty in Sandakan where you’ll board a boat that will take you on an hour-long journey up the Lower Kinabatangan River to your next accommodation, where you’ll arrive in time for lunch.

Later in the afternoon, you’ll embark on an immersive boat cruise in search of some of the area’s diverse wildlife, returning to the lodge for dinner as fireflies begin to emerge in the falling dusk. Following dinner, you’ll set out again for a night walk to encounter some of the rainforest’s nocturnal species including birds, snakes, insects and more.

River Safaris & Jungle Walk

Be woken by the sounds of monkeys and birdsong before your morning river trip to Pitas Oxbow Lake to observe wildlife.

After returning to the lodge for breakfast, you’ll be free to explore the lodge and its surrounds before visiting the nearby village of Abai in the afternoon, where you’ll enjoy a rustic traditional lunch prepared by the villagers.

After lunch and seeing the locals’ way of life, you’ll return to the lodge and have the some of the afternoon to explore the surrounds. Venturing around the grounds, keep your eyes trained on the tree line for the chance to spot species such as wild orangutan, silver leaf monkeys and a plethora of birdlife. Later in the afternoon, you’ll embark on another river safari to encounter Borneo’s wildlife.

Day 4: Lower Kinabatangan-Segama Wetlands

Day 5: Gaya Island

Transfer to Gaya Island

After breakfast, you’ll check out of the lodge and head downriver aboard a boat during a one-hour transfer back to the jetty in Sandakan. From here you will be transferred to the airport for your scheduled flight to Kota Kinabalu.

Arriving in Kota Kinabalu, you’ll be driven to the jetty in Jesselton Point to board a speedboat that will take you to your stunning resort on Gaya Island, a pristine island encircled by crystal-clear waters and draped in lush rainforest.

The rest of the day you’ll be free at leisure to enjoy the island’s tropical scenery and your resort’s wealth of facilities.

The next few days are yours to enjoy at leisure amid the stunning tropical surrounds of Gaya Island, giving you opportunity to unwind following your Bornean wildlife adventure.

Enjoy your luxury resort's wealth of facilities and activities, soak up the sun on a pristine beach, explore the island's rainforested interior during guided nature walks with a resident naturalist to spot proboscis monkeys or snorkel in the dazzlingly clear waters of the protected Tunku Abdul Marine Park to admire flourishing coral reefs and abundant marine life.

Depart Malaysian Borneo
