Explore the country’s culture and relax on its beautiful beaches. Kick off in Ubud, the cultural and spiritual heart of Bali, be awed by the stunning temples of Prambanan and visit the largest Buddhist monument in the world: the Borobudur Temples. You’ll then get in sun, sand and surf at the famed Nusa Dua Beach.

On arrival in Bali transfer to Ubud, up in the mountains. Check into your accommodation and relax by the pool, take in the cool mountain air and recover from your long flight.

Explore Ubud

Enjoy two full days in Ubud, the cultural and spiritual heart of the island. There are plenty of activities on offer, you could take a trek through the terraced rice paddies and gain an understanding of rural life. Or, head to the sacred Monkey Forest where monkeys roam freely and have made their home at the Hindu temple. Or visit the markets where you can shop for locally produced craft from furniture to fashion.

Yogyakarta and Prambanan Temples

After breakfast, you'll be picked up from your hotel in Ubud and transferred to the airport in time for your flight to Yogyakarta in Java where you’ll be met, greeted and immediately whisked off on a city tour. First stop: the 9th century temples of Prambanan, an impressive collection of shrines dedicated to the Hindi gods of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva and one of the largest Hindu temple complexes in Indonesia. You’ll also visit Ratu Boko, a former royal palace built on a plateau, 196 metres above sea level offering exceptional views of Prambanan and Mount Merapi, the most active volcano in the country. At the end of your day, head to Magelang for check in and an overnight stay.

Borobudur and Candirejo Village

Wake before sunrise and head to Borobudur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest Buddhist monuments in the world. You’ll have plenty of time to explore this nine-terraced complex built from over two million square blocks and its 500 Buddhist statues. The second part of your morning adventure is a visit to the village of Candirejo surrounded by plantations and lush scenery – this is your chance to learn about harvesting and other local activities. Travel to the village by traditional horse-drawn dokar (or use pedal power as you bike to and from the village!) End the excursion with a lesson in Indonesian Gamelan music and lunch at a local restaurant before heading back to your hotel for an afternoon spent relaxing at your leisure.

Your tour of Yogyakarta begins with a visit to traditional kris maker – an asymmetrical dagger with distinctive blade, the kris is integral to the ritual, ceremony, myths and poetry of central Java. Carry on by rickshaw to Kraton (or the Sultan’s Palace) where you’ll find a pleasure park and a collection of buildings from the 1700s. Next up is the opportunity to watch silver crafting at a local workshop in the Kota Gede neighbourhood. Later in the day you’ll be directly transferred to the airport to catch your onward flight to the island of Bali where you’ll end the day at your beachfront hotel in Seminyak.
