The beaches of LA are packed with activities, so there's something to suit everyone. Venice Beach is surrounded by basketball and tennis courts, and bodybuilders can be found on Muscle Beach. Surfers can enjoy Venice Breakwater, which was created by an artificial barrier. Cycling is popular at Long Beach, where there are 60 miles of off-road paths, including the 3-mile Shoreline Pedestrian Bikepath. At Redondo Beach you can enjoy a spot of whale watching on one of the boat trips.

Those living in LA are renowned for their healthy lifestyles, but that doesn't mean they don't enjoy food, and you'll find plenty of choice at the beach resorts. This area is a food lover's paradise and the streets are filled with bistros, cafes, restaurants, ethnic markets, gastro-pubs and coffee houses. The Santa Monica pier is one of the area's most famous attractions, with the popular amusement park including the Ferris wheel and roller coaster. There is also the Redondo Beach pier with more than 50 shops, restaurants and fast-food stalls to browse. At Venice Beach you can enjoy the relative tranquillity of the fishing pier, admire the skaters taking to the ramps and railings of the skate park or try out a new sport such as volleyball or handball at the recreation centre.
