There are over 600 wine producers in California's wine growing area. Tours are available that incorporate wine tasting with other activities, such as a visit to outlet shops or a chance to taste the best food on offer. Take your tour by foot or by cycle. Kayak tours can take you up the Russian River or round the Jenner Coast. Lunch is a picnic at a small riverside beach. Alternatively, ride through the area's lush vineyards and woodlands on horseback.

California wine country not only produces great wines but also many fine foods, such as goat cheeses. The style of cuisine in California wine country is known as modern American, which includes upscale comfort food as well as delicate preparations. You will find menus featuring Italian, French and Japanese dishes. For the best restaurants head for the southern end of the Napa valley. Many vineyards have their own restaurants or cafes and these are a good place to try artisanal food.

The Barlow was an apple processing plant but it now houses a village of artists, winemakers, food producers, coffee roasters, spirits distillers and a few independent restaurants. You can try nitrogen flash-frozen ice cream and house-brewed beer. In summer, there are street fairs with local vendors and live music. Jack London Park is a 1400-acre area with an onsite museum covering the author's last years. There are miles of hiking trails, some of which can be traversed by mountain bike
