One of the most popular US holiday destinations, San Francisco is a beautiful city with its western shore on the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay to the east. There are many green parks and sleepy harbour towns, and the Golden Gate Bridge is known the world over. Often known as the City by the Bay, it's a somewhat unconventional place. This is a city of hills, steep streets, frequent fog and cable cars. Visit Alcatraz Island (tours available) off North Beach, climb the tallest building - the Transamerica Pyramid skyscraper - and spot sea lions at Pier 39 at Fisherman's Wharf. The shops, restaurants and fairground type attractions at the Wharf act as a magnet for tourists. Angel Island State Park is a favourite with many visitors and entertainment abound in the city.
