Xuan La Craft Village & Hanoi City Highlights
In the morning, you will be driven for an hour through the lush countryside which surrounds Hanoi to the craft village of Xuan La, famous for its ‘to he’ figurines. Using cooked rice flour dough and natural colourings, the local villagers here deftly create these whimsical figurines mounted on sticks which mimic everything from Vietnamese folk heroes to modern-day cartoon characters. The precise recipe for this rice flour ‘clay’ is a closely guarded secret by the approximate 300 artisans who maintain this traditional craft. Accompanied by a local guide, you’ll tour this charming village and meet a well-known ‘to he’ artisan to observe the process of making these delightful figurines before having the opportunity to try your hand at creating your very own.
During the afternoon, you’ll enjoy a tour of Hanoi, often referred to as the ‘Paris of the East’ for its yellow-ochre French colonial architecture, tree-lined boulevards and picturesque lakes. The tour includes a visit to the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first national university which was built in the 11th century and is an excellent example of traditional Vietnamese architecture. You’ll also stop off at the Vietnamese Women’s Museum, which offers a broad insight into the people of Vietnam – including the country’s 54 ethnic groups – through the lens of women’s topics. The tour concludes with a walking tour through Hanoi’s frenetic yet photogenic Old Quarter, where each street is named after the goods originally sold here, including everything from silk to silver. Explore this stimulating maze of backstreets fronted by narrow houses known as ‘tunnel’ or ’tube houses’ and soak in the eclectic atmosphere of Hanoi’s historical heart.
Accommodation:
Halong Bay Cruise
In the morning, you will be driven from Hanoi to Tuan Chau, which sits on the edge of the otherworldly Halong Bay, whose emerald waters lie dotted with thousands of limestone karst islands capped with rainforest. The drive will take approximately 2 hrs 30 mins.
Arriving at the harbour in Tuan Chau, you will board a beautiful Vietnamese-junk-inspired vessel for a magnificent one-night cruise through Halong Bay’s dreamscape scenery. The itinerary and activities will vary depending on which cruise you opt for, though either option will allow you to enjoy luxurious onboard facilities including sumptuous dining, spa experiences and an on-deck jacuzzi.

Buffalo Cart & Fishing Life Tour, Hoi An Walking Tour
The flat and tranquil roads around Hoi An’s countryside are perfect for exploring with a traditional buffalo cart, an authentic and oft-glimpsed mode of transport in Vietnam’s rural corners. Across Vietnam, farmers and buffalo working the verdant fields have become a symbol of rural life, with buffalo being a farmer’s most prized possession. During your scenic ride, you’ll glimpse stunning vistas of the Vietnamese countryside, which consists of mist-shrouded rice paddies, shrimp farms and vegetable farms. Reaching a dock, you will board a local river boat and embark on a cruise down the scenic Hoi An River, stopping along the way to try your hand at casting a traditional fishing net, a common fishing method still practiced today. You can then learn the art of paddling Vietnam’s unique round basket boats before returning to your river boat to sit down for a sumptuous selection of light seafood dishes and a refreshing drink as you head back upriver and return to town.
Between the 15th and 19th centuries Hoi An (then known as “Faifo”) was a prosperous trading port which attracted Chinese, Japanese, Dutch, Portuguese and Spanish merchant ships. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose immaculately preserved Ancient Town is renowned for its quaint architecture, pedestrian streets and distinctive local cuisine, enabling visitors a glimpse into Hoi An’s illustrious past.
