Muscat - Al Hamra

It’s an early start today as you leave the capital behind and head into the mountains. Your final destination: the 400-year-old town of Al Hamra. Along the way you’ll have a memorable – and perhaps hair-raising – drive through the spectacular Wadi Bani Auf with its sharp bends and steep climbs rewarding you with breathtaking views. Pass through the village of Bilat Syat, an oasis in the middle of the mountains surrounded by date palms and stop off to visit the impressive Jabrin Palace Fort, built in the late 1600s and one of the best preserved fortifications – inside are elaborately painted ceilings, while outside are latticed windows and battlements. Your day ends by checking into your hotel in Al Hamra.

Day 4: Al Hamra Leisure Day

Al Hamra

Sitting at the foot of the Hajjar Mountains, you have an entire day to explore the town of Al Hamra, one of the oldest in Oman with a collection of mud-brick houses in the Yemeni style. The winding streets are best explored on foot, whether visiting Bait al Safah, a ‘living’ museum of a fully restored building filled with artefacts and traditional furnishings, stumbling across ruins or simply sitting in the shade of one of the many date palms.

INCLUDES : Breakfast, Dinner

Day 5: Nizwa & Wahiba Sands

Al Hamra - Nizwa - Wahiba Sands

The first stop on today’s itinerary is Nizwa. Here you’ll have time to explore the 17th century Round Tower & Fort with its 40-metre high tower, zigzagging stairways and connecting rooftops providing excellent views. There’s also time to explore the local souq, one of the oldest in the country – you can haggle for bargains over silver, antiques or pottery. One of the real highlights of the trip, is the chance to swim in the emerald waters of Wadi Bani Khalid, a series of deep pools – we recommended heading to the upper pools, smaller but quieter. Then you’ll head into the Wahiba Sands, visiting a local family and learning a little about their way of life before arriving at your luxury desert camp where you’ll spend a night in one of the Bedouin-style tents.
