Sri Lanka has a way of drawing you in from the moment you arrive. The warmth, the colour, the rhythm of daily life all hit you at once, and before long you find yourself slowing down to match the island’s pace. For our team, this trip was a chance to experience it all first-hand, to walk the landscapes we talk about every day and deepen the expertise we share with our clients. What followed was a journey that carried us from the buzz of Colombo to the misty calm of tea country, from leopard territory in Yala to the sun-soaked south coast, each day revealing a new layer of this remarkable island.

Following a classic route through this soulful island's most coveted sights and landscapes, our team's incredible journey might be the perfect inspiration for you to start planning your own luxury Sri Lanka touring holiday.

Day 1: Colombo - Easing Into Island Life

The drive into Colombo gave us our first glimpse of daily life: tuk tuks weaving through traffic, fruit stalls on the roadside, the Indian Ocean flashing between buildings. Shangri-La Colombo felt like a calm exhale after the journey. We checked in, freshened up and met for dinner at Central Restaurant, where the curries were rich, the seafood fresh and the welcome genuinely warm. It was the perfect soft landing.

Day 2: Into the Heart of the Tea Country

We left the coast behind and headed inland towards Dickoya. The drive was long, around five to six hours, but never dull. Paddy fields gave way to forested hills, then waterfalls, then the unmistakable patchwork of tea plantations. By the time we reached our stunning accommodation at Uga Haloowella, the air was cooler and everything felt quieter, slower, greener.

Day 3: Tea Gardens, Tastings and Total Tranquillity

The morning began with a walk through the tea gardens, the kind of peaceful start that makes you forget what time it is. Visiting a working tea factory was a highlight – seeing the process from leaf to cup made the Ceylon tea tasting afterwards feel even more special. Lunch back at the bungalow was relaxed, and the afternoon drifted by in that tea country way where the world seems to pause.

Day 4: From Misty Hillsides to the Wild South

After breakfast we set off again, this time towards Yala. We stopped in Ella for lunch, and even with just a short visit, the views were incredible – steep cliffs, lush valleys and that slightly bohemian mountain town vibe. As we continued south, the landscape shifted dramatically. The air grew warmer, the vegetation sparser, and by the time we reached Yala, it felt like we’d arrived somewhere completely different. The afternoon was ours to unwind and settle in to Uga Chena Huts - our sensational home for the next 2 nights.

Day 5: Safari Moments and Sipping on Sundowners

Our safari day started early, but the excitement made it easy and we were all eager to get started. Yala didn’t disappoint. We spotted elephants, leopard, deer, birds in every colour and shape, and even the rustle of something big in the bushes that kept us guessing. The afternoon drive brought new sightings and a deeper appreciation for how raw and beautiful this part of Sri Lanka is. Sundowners at Chena Huts afterwards felt like the perfect ending – the sky turning gold as we swapped stories from the day.

Day 6: Coastal Calm and the Road to Weligama

After a relaxed morning in Yala, we began the coastal drive towards Weligama, stopping for lunch in Tangalle. The coastline softened as we approached the south, with long beaches and swaying palms anchoring the tranquil scenery. Arriving at Cape Weligama felt like stepping into a postcard, its clifftop location offering breathtaking views across the Indian Ocean waters. We checked in and let the refreshing ocean breeze do the rest.

Day 7: Cape Weligama's Oceanfront Bliss

Our final day unfolded on the sun-drenched headland of Cape Weligama, where the views sweep across the Indian Ocean in every direction. With no schedule to keep, we drifted between the infinity pool and the Cove Beach Club, soaking up the easy rhythm of the south coast. The water was warm, the breeze gentle, and the whole place had that rare, effortless luxury that makes you want to stay just a little longer. It was the perfect ending to a week that showed us the very best of Sri Lanka.
