3. Shawarma

Typically strips of chicken - but sometimes lamb - shawarma consists of meat cooked on a spit with spices. It’s then served in pita bread with lettuce and a drizzle of tahini sauce. If you are in the mood for something sweet then you’ll want to try this layer cake made with local honey and cream, and finished off with a sprinkling of biscuit crumbs. Perfectly complimented by a cup of coffee.

What to drink in Ras Al Khaimah

Need a beverage to go with those delicious Arabian dishes? Here are some of the most popular drinks that you might like have to accompany your meal:

1. Arabic Coffee

Arabic coffee - which you might see on menus as gahwa - is perhaps the most popular drink in the UAE. This warming beverage, which is often spiced with saffron, cloves, cumin and cardamom, is served in an Arabian coffee pot, known as a dallah. It’s then poured into finjaan - small cups that you’ll cradle in your hands as they don’t have handles. The Arabic word for coffee means strong and it definitely is here! Traditionally, it’s served with dates - the ideal mid-morning pick me up.

2. Arabic Tea

If you’re not a fan of coffee but fancy a hot drink, you’ll be pleased to hear that tea is almost as popular in Ras Al Khaimah. It can be strong and black or herbal - such as Chai Noomi Basra which is a dried lime tea. The one you are most likely to come across is Karak Chai which is spiced and fragrant. This might be served with ginger, fennel, cinnamon or cardamom.

3. Amar al-Din

If you are looking for a cool and refreshing drink then you’ll want to try Amar al-Din. This is a thick apricot drink that is particularly popular in the UAE during Ramadan. It is made from dried apricots which are mixed with either rosewater or orange blossom water. Ice is then added to the drink and nuts (or other toppings) provide the finishing touches.

4. Jellab

Another refreshing drink - that’s also typically enjoyed during Ramadan - is Jellab. This drink consists of grape - but sometimes date syrup - mixed with rose water. Toppings such as pine nuts or raisins can then be added.

5. Laban

This buttermilk drink, which is both rich and creamy, is often flavoured with rosewater, orange blossom water or blended dates. Alternatively, spices may be added to it including cardamom and saffron.
