As the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi offers no shortage of attractions and activities to keep you busy during your holiday. From family-friendly theme parks to cultural must-sees, your days will be packed with unforgettable experiences. Whether you’re planning a fun family holiday or a romantic getaway, the UAE’s cultural capital has something for everyone.

Here are our favourite things to do in Abu Dhabi.

Incredible Cultural Wonders

Abu Dhabi is home to historic sites, architectural wonders, and immersive attractions, making it a cultural destination worth exploring. Whether you’re travelling in winter, summer, spring, or autumn, here are our top picks of Abu Dhabi’s cultural attractions.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Clad in white marble, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque – one of the world’s largest mosques – is a stunning example of modern Islamic architecture and design. Open to visitors of all beliefs, you can explore the mosque at your own pace, or take a complimentary 45-minute guided tour for a deeper cultural experience.

Reflective pools, framed by Arabic arches, create a jaw-dropping visual, while intricate floral designs decorate the outer courtyard. The mosque features 1,000 columns inlaid with amethyst and jasper, and 82 domes surrounded by calligraphy. It also houses the world’s largest hand-woven carpet, which took two years to complete!

Louvre Abu Dhabi

The first museum of its kind in the Arab world, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is a premier cultural institution showcasing permanent collections alongside four major exhibitions each year. Located on Saadiyat Island, one of the standout architectural features – designed by award-winning architect Jean Nouvel – is the iconic silver dome. Made up of nearly 8,000 unique metal stars arranged in a complex geometric pattern, it creates a "moving rain of light" as sunlight filters through.

Al Ain Oasis

Visit the Al Ain Oasis, the UAE’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spread across 3,000 acres, the oasis is home to nearly 150,000 date palms of around 100 different varieties, as well as mango, banana, and orange trees, all irrigated by a 3,000-year-old falaj (irrigation) system.

Stop by the educational eco-centre, and take a leisurely walk along the tranquil paths that wind through the oasis. Bike hire and buggy tours are also available.

Masdar City

A vision of the future, Masdar City aims to be the world’s most sustainable eco-city. Powered by wind and solar energy, the city features the largest solar panel farm in the Middle East. A wind tower provides natural ventilation to counter the heat, and if you want to get around, there’s a personal rapid transit (PRT) system – a fleet of driverless cars operating underground.

Jebel Hafeet Tombs

Did you know that civilisation in the UAE dates back to the Bronze Age? In the foothills of Jebel Hafeet Mountain, you’ll find hundreds of beehive-shaped tombs believed to be over 5,000 years old, housing the remains of early inhabitants of the area.

As part of the World Heritage Site of Al Ain, the tombs are open for exploration, with artefacts such as beads, pottery, spearheads, and daggers on display.

Seek Thrills at the Theme Parks

Abu Dhabi is home to a range of theme parks that will thrill adrenaline-seekers. Whether you're experiencing the twists and turns of a roller coaster or zooming down a water slide, these parks are sure to get your blood pumping. But don’t worry – there are also plenty of family-friendly attractions with more gentle-paced rides.

Largely indoors – perfect for cooling off – it features a variety of rides to get your heart racing, including the world’s fastest roller coaster, Formula Rossa, which reaches speeds of 240 km/h. Or, take a slower ride with the Viaggio in Italia flight simulator or go-karting at the Karting Academy.

Start your day with a splash at Yas Waterworld, an Emirati-themed water park. Spanning 37 acres, this iconic park boasts an endless array of twisting water slides and exhilarating rides for all ages.

You can surf the world’s largest sheet wave at Bubbles Barrel, float along Al Raha River, and experience the region’s first free-fall drop water slide, Liwa Loop.
