The final days offer sightings of 3000-year old cave paintings and a quintessential Argentinean send-off.

Day 1

Arrival into Buenos Aires

Arrive into Buenos Aires airport and be met by your local representative and transferred to your hotel.

Remainder of your day at leisure.

The sprawling metropolis that glitters in the afternoon rays reflected from the River Plate is home to over one-third of the country’s population and an even greater portion of its economic output.  Founded in 1580, Buenos Aires is today the largest city in South America.  Also known as the city that never sleeps, as its many and varied around-the clock attractions never fail to surprise and impress first-time visitors and are a source of recurring pleasure for those returning to the city.

Day 1

Day 2: Boca district, Recoleta and Tango

Half day city tour. Dinner and Tango show

After breakfast, you will meet your guide in your hotel lobby for a fascinating 4-hour tour of the elegant turn-of-the-century districts that earned Buenos Aires the soubriquet of the Paris of South America.  From the charming cobbled alleys and colonial architecture of San Telmo to the Colorful Boca district, along to the Plaza de Mayo, dominated by the Casa Rosada (Government House), the Nación Bank, the Cathedral and original Parliament House, up the leafy Avenida de Mayo towards the imposing grandeur of the Palace of Congress and then on to finish at the historically fascinating Recoleta Cemetery, you will discover the facts, stories and anecdotes that make up the colourful tapestry of the history of Buenos Aires.

Enjoy a typically Argentine first-class meal, be it the traditional steak, chicken or Patagonian lamb with a mouth-watering array of salads as well as any of a number of excellent pasta dishes before settling down for a tango show which includes some of the best-loved songs, music and dances performed by skilled musicians and dancers.

INCLUDES : Breakfast, Dinner

Day 2: Boca district, Recoleta and Tango

Day 3: Puerto Madryn, Punta Tombo Penguins

Flight from Buenos Aires to Puerto Madryn

After breakfast meet your guide at the hotel lobby for a transfer to the domestic airport for further your flight to Trelew.  Arrive in Trelew airport and prior to the transfer to your hotel in Puerto Madryn and whilst en route, enjoy a visit to the Punta Tombo Penguin rockery

Punta Tombo
From Trelew drive south to visit the largest colony of Magellan penguins in South America, which reaches over half a million birds during peak times when the baby penguins start to hatch in November.  One of the greatest features of this reserve is the fact that you can literally walk among the penguins, follow them and learn their habits, see how they feed their babies, observe their courtship rituals, their fights to defend their territories, how they build their nests, and their comically characteristic waddle to and from the sea.  The penguin’s natural predators are the killer whale and the seal, which sometimes make brief forays close to shore.  The penguin’s season is from October to April.

INCLUDES : Breakfast

Day 3: Puerto Madryn, Punta Tombo Penguins

Day 4: Peninsula Valdes tour

Full day Peninsula Valdes tour

A full day visit to the Peninsula, leaving Puerto Madryn early to drive north through the flat grey expanse of Patagonian steppes where you might see an occasional rhea – South American ostrich, guanaco  or small deer.  Some 25km further along the road, Caleta Valdés, a 35km long natural creek embraced by a long narrow promontory is home to a colony of sea elephants who’s grunting and roaring announces their presence at a good distance.

After Caleta Valdés, the road suddenly drops down into a crescent of golden cliffs overlooking a bright blue fan of water which is the bay of the small village of Puerto Piramides. The herds of southern right whales (thus named because it was the “right” whale to hunt for its turpitude and tendency to swim close to the surface) tend to arrive in late August, although some are often sighted as early as June.  They frequent the bay of Puerto Piramides, their dark shapes arcing through the waves clearly visible from the shore, often blowing fountains of water into the sky.  There are boat trips organised into the bay from which you can watch these immensely dignified creatures.

INCLUDES : Breakfast

Day 4: Peninsula Valdes tour

Day 5: Travel to Ushuaia

Trelew airport for your flight to Ushuaia

This morning you will be transferred back to Trelew Airport in time for your flight to the southern most city in the world - Ushuaia. You will be met upon arrival and transferred to your hotel where you can enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

The city at the end of the world, the town of Ushuaia lies on the shores of the Beagle Channel, a community which depends variously on fishing, heavy industry and tourism for its livelihood. The first settlers were missionaries who built simple wooden dwellings on the water’s edge to house their families, not so different from the wooden Scandinavian-style houses which line the main street of Ushuaia today.  The city is an excellent base from which to explore the Martial Glacier which overlooks the town, the Lapataia National Park or from which to take one of the many boat excursions along the Beagle Channel to sight the wildlife, from sea-lions to penguins and cormorants in a natural habitat of spectacular and remote beauty.

INCLUDES : Breakfast

Day 5: Travel to Ushuaia

Day 6: Tierra del Fuego National Park

Half Day Tierra del Fuego National Park

Today enjoy a day tour exploring the southern-most city in Tierra del Fuego.

One of the two narrow-gauge tracks left in Argentina, the Ferrocarril Austral Fueguino used to ferry prisoners from the island’s prison stronghold into the National Park to fell and chop trees.

We get off the train at the National Park station and continue by bus exploring the depths of the 63,000 hectares of abundant wildlife: fire bushes, beech trees, ñires, box-leafed barberries, and flowers such as orchids and violets among others. We follow a road across the mountains with chances to spot peat bogs and beaver dams before arriving at Lapataia River. Once we cross the river, we get a lovely view of Laguna Verde and the upland geese and ibis that come here every summer. In Lapataia Bay we can explore the area where the first inhabitants of the Island left their testimony: the Yamana kitchen, an interesting archeological place. Before returning to Ushuaia we stop at Lago Roca, whose colour varies according to the weather.

The Perito Moreno glacier is thirty kilometres long, this imposing wall of ice towers some 70 meters above the walkways that offer you a selection of different views from the promontory of Península de Magallanes that juts out into the Lago Argentino.  As you stand below gazing up at the massive rugged face, you become aware that the glacier is very much a living, evolving thing, as creaks and cracks like rifle shots preface the 'desprendimientos', huge chunks the size of houses which break off and fall in slow motion through the air into the black waters. They hit the surface with an almighty crash, submerging and rising up again to bob away as icebergs into the centre of the lake.
