Grab a rental bike and get out and about. New bike lanes through downtown are a fast and traffic-jam-free way to cruise around the downtown core. Early April brings the Art Car Parade, where decorated vehicles vie for prizes. Those who prefer quieter pursuits can walk the Azalea Trail, particularly beautiful in March, or the Bayou Bend Gardens. Be sure to spend a day at the Houston Space Center, where the Mercury 9 capsule, Skylab trainer and Saturn V rocket are all on display.

For fresh seafood, head for Galveston Island, where you can dine on fresh-caught fish. Houston is famous for beef, as the area still holds cattle drives. Several famous BBQ restaurants, such as the Barbecue Inn or Ray's Barbecue Shack, will have you lining up for seconds. Every type of cuisine is available on holidays to Houston & Galveston, but a true Texan washes everything down with a beer. Try beer from smaller breweries such as Houston's own Buffalo Bayou or Saint Arnold Brewing.

Getting around in Houston is easy, with cars, buses, taxis, light rail and the dedicated bike lanes in downtown. There is plenty of shopping, including a mall in Galveston known as The Strand and the high street mall known as The Galleria in Houston. The Galleria also features an indoor ice rink for cooling off during hot Houston summers. Try the Galveston Waterpark with its epic new waterslide - the tallest in the world - then listen to jazz on a rooftop bar while the sun sets.
