Where to stay in Thailand if you’re visiting for the second time

The great thing about visiting Thailand for the second time is that you’ve likely already experienced a lot of what Thailand has to offer, what to look out for, and how to get there. Forget endless packing lists and confusion around what currency you need, chances are; if you’re reading this, you’re planning a trip back to the land of smiles and wondering how to make your second stay a little different.

From vibrant nightlife to off-the-beaten track locations, along with some of the countries coolest new hotels; here are some of our favourite places to visit and stay in Thailand if you're visiting for the second time.

Landed in the wrong place and it's your first time considering a Thailand holiday? Check out our Thailand Travel Guide that's packed full of tips and tricks for first time visitors.

Chiang Mai

The capital city of northern Thailand has so much to offer. From beautiful temples and gardens, to longtail boat rides through the canals and floating markets, Chiang Mai has it all. If you're looking for somewhere new this time around, try venturing out into the surrounding mountains where there are several waterfalls and jungle trails waiting to be explored.

Love to explore temples? Wat Chedi Luang is one of the best in Chiang Mai. The iconic chedi (stupa) is visible from all over town, so taking a trip here will give you a great perspective on the city. Inside are several shrines dedicated to Buddha statues and relics; walk around them or climb up into the chedi itself!

A 30 minute drive from the busy old town, we recommend staying at the 5 star Raya Heritage during your second time visiting - exceptional views of the River Ping and a relaxed atmosphere allow you to soak up Chiang Mai from a new perspective. If you fancy venturing out, take the complimentary shuttle into the heart of the city to explore more sacred temples and bustling markets - we love the night bazaar for delicious street food.

If you’re looking for a unique and unforgettable experience on your second visit to Thailand, The Bush Camp is a fantastic option. The perfect place to connect with nature and experience traditional Thai culture, and just outside of Chiang Mai - this 2-day tour is a bucket-list essential for thrill seekers and animal lovers alike.

Bangkok

Bangkok is one of the world's most visited cities and there's no doubt why: its bustling streets are full of fun things to do, great food to eat, and interesting people (both Thai and international). Whether you're heading back into town after a few days out at sea or just passing through on your way up north, Bangkok will always have something new in store for you!

Away from the hustle and bustle of the city as you know it, Bangkok is also home to some of the world's most incredible temples. These are places where you can find peace and quiet, but they're also full of history and culture that will leave you feeling like you've really experienced Thailand. Here are some of our favourites:

Wat Pho: This is one of the oldest temples in Bangkok, dating back to 1782. It's known for its giant reclining Buddha and for being a centre for traditional Thai medicine. You can even get a foot massage here!

Wat Arun: If you want to see the sunrise over the Chao Phraya River from one of the best vantage points in town (and who doesn't?), this is your chance. The temple itself is beautiful, but it's also got great views from its terrace—so if you're planning on staying overnight at another temple or hotel nearby (or just want a quick place to stop by), this one is worth checking out!

Wat Benchamabopit: Located near Chinatown, this temple has an interesting history

When visiting for the second time, we recommend a stay at ultra-cool The Standard, Bangkok – a brand new hotel with the highest sky bar in the city. Stays here are effortlessly cool and totally unique. From live entertainment from Bangkok locals to traditional afternoon tea in seriously chic surroundings, you won’t be short of things to do.

Koh Phangan

25 minutes by speedboat from Koh Samui, Koh Phangan is famous for its breathtaking beaches, vibrant nightlife and stunning scenery, and there’s always something new to discover. Whether you want to experience the lively full moon parties on Haad Rin Beach or relax in total seclusion, there’s something for everyone here.

When visiting for the second time, give snorkelling or diving a go. The waters around Koh Phangan are home to an incredible variety of marine life, including colourful coral reefs, tropical fish and even turtles. There are many dive shops on the island or from your hotel that offer trips, allowing you to explore the underwater world with a professional guide.

One of our favourite resorts to book is the luxurious 5 star Anantara Rasananda Koh Phangan. This trendy and beachfront resort takes you away from the crowds, making it ideal for a relaxed hideaway holiday. All villas and suites here have the luxury of a private pool, so you may never want to leave the comfort of your home away from home.

Koh Lanta

About 90 minutes South from Krabi, Koh Lanta is a relaxed island and the perfect starting point for exploring the surrounding islands including Koh Rok, Koh Phi Phi and Koh Mook, all known for their beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters and incredible diving opportunities.

A visit to the old town is a must-do when you have a free afternoon - the charming village located on the east coast of the Island is home to a number of traditional wooden houses, quaint cafes and seafood restaurants.

One of our best-sellers, Pimalai Resort & Spa is a superb choice when you’re looking for an indulgent stay that goes above and beyond. Choose one of the larger villas to accommodate the whole family.

In conclusion, Thailand is truly remarkable country with something to offer every type of traveller. For those that have already visited Thailand or are looking for new experiences, Koh Lanta, Chiang Mai, Koh Phangan and Bangkok are fantastic destinations to explore. The longer you stay, or the more times you return, you'll always learn something new, and capture a new breathtaking view. From relaxation to adventure and everything in between, these destinations have it all.
