Croatia's incredible Adriatic coastline has made it a destination of note over the past decade, but people have been drawn to this wonderful land for centuries. Constantly fought over, Croatia's independence has been hard won, but the influence of the cultures that came before has made for a country that is as fascinating as it is beautiful.

While Croatia is most famous for the Dalmatian coast and the 70-odd islands dotted along it, the Croatian hinterland has a lot going on, and any trip to the country should at least include spending some time in the capital, Zagreb. Back on the coast, island hop between the sunny Hvar and the white rock of Bol before heading to Dubrovnik, where ancient city walls hide modern bars. Or head to the lesser discovered, Italian influenced region of Istria where Venetian towns hug the shoreline and food is at the heart of the culture.

Croatia Travel Information

New Schengen entry requirements (planned for November 2024 onwards)

From November 2024, the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) will start for all non-EU nationals, including British nationals, travelling in or out of the Schengen area. The Schengen area is made up of 29 European countries, 25 of which are EU Member States. The EES is a digital border system which registers non-EU visitors travelling into the Schengen area instead of stamping their passports.

You will need to have your fingerprints and your photo taken when entering the Schengen area. If you enter the Schengen area through Dover, Eurotunnel at Folkestone or St Pancras International, your fingerprints and photo will be taken before you leave the UK. You will also need to provide either your fingerprint or photo on exit.

You may experience longer queues at borders when the new system starts.

Passport Validity

To enter Europe, your passport must have:

a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it may have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago

an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave

at least one blank page for stamping

Croatia is a paradise for adventure seekers; the rugged coastline provides plenty of opportunities for diving and sailing, while the country's dramatic mountain range offers ideal terrain for climbing, hiking and walking. If you are looking for something a little less adrenaline fuelled, explore the Istrian wine region. In the north-west, where the Danube and Drava rivers meet, cyclists will find a haven of flat land to explore, while sea lovers can go kayaking in the Adriatic.

High on any list of reasons to visit Croatia will be food. Blessed as it is with such a wonderful coastline, it will come as no surprise to learn that seafood and fish feature heavily on Croatian menus, especially if you are hopping around the many islands that lay off the coast. The country's cuisine is based on simple, hearty fare, especially inland, but in cities such as Zagreb, Dubrovnik and Split, chefs are beginning to innovate, making it a great time to visit if you are a foodie.

Croatia's history and architecture is as varied as its landscape; wandering around Split or Dubrovnik you are as likely to come across a Venetian palace as you are a Slavic church. Exploring the country's past is a wonderful way to get in touch with its present, making trips to Diocletian's Palace in Split, Trsat Castle in Riejka and the Roman amphitheatre in Pula a must. And be sure not to leave before experiencing the incredible watery world of Plitvice Lakes national park.
