The Maldives is a year-round destination, but conditions, prices and underwater experiences vary considerably by season. The archipelago has two monsoons: the dry north-east monsoon (Iruvai) from December to April and the wet south-west monsoon (Hulhangu) from May to November.

• December to April: This is the dry season in the Maldives, where you can expect blue skies, low humidity and crystal clear Indian Ocean water. This time of year is the most reliable window for an all-inclusive escape; however, the most expensive time to visit.
• May & November: Considered the sweet spot from a value perspective, during these months, you’ll experience a mix of sunshine and short tropical bursts of rain. During this period, you may find all-inclusive packages that include bonus perks. It’s often considered the best time to book an ultra all-inclusive resort for a lower price.
• June to October: Perfect for those looking for maximum indulgence, given you will be travelling in the wet season and can experience more frequent rain, the all-inclusive aspect of your holiday will not disappoint. If the rain keeps you off the beach, you can retreat to the resort’s bars, speciality restaurants and indoor facilities without incurring more costs. It’s a prime time for families and budget-conscious luxury travellers dreaming of a 5-star Maldivian hospitality experience.

The underwater calendar matters too. Manta rays and whale sharks gather in Hanifaru Bay (Baa Atoll, UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) from May to November, peaking in August–October, so green-season travellers often get the best wildlife encounters. North Ari Atoll has whale sharks year-round. For the strongest reef snorkelling visibility, target January to April.

Whichever month you choose, your resort sits 1–2 metres above sea level on a coral atoll: pack reef-safe sunscreen, polarised sunglasses and very little else.

A Maldives trip is often a dream holiday, so it’s important to make sure you get the best possible experience. Here's what our specialists recommend.

• Book 8–14 months ahead for peak dates. Christmas, New Year, February half-term and Easter sell out earliest, particularly water villas and family rooms. For green-season dates (May–September), 3-6 months ahead is usually enough, and last-minute All Inclusive savings do appear.
• Choose your atoll before you choose your resort. Resorts in North and South Malé Atolls are reached by 20–45 minute speedboat transfer, ideal if you want to minimise travel time, Baa, Raa, Lhaviyani and Noonu Atolls require 30–50 minute seaplane flights (only operating in daylight) and reward you with quieter reefs. South Ari is the best base for whale sharks.
• Compare All Inclusive tiers, not just headline prices. A standard All Inclusive package at one resort can be more expensive than All Inclusive Plus at another once you factor in speciality restaurants, premium drinks and excursions. • Beach villa or water villa? Water villas typically cost 40–80% more than beach villas. They're spectacular for honeymoons and short stays, but if you’ve visited this paradise before, you might consider splitting longer trips: a few nights in a beach villa, a few nights over water.
• Check the seaplane cut-off. Seaplanes don't fly after dark. If your London flight arrives in Malé after roughly 4pm, you may need an overnight stay in Malé or a same-night domestic flight plus speedboat.
