Holidays to Amsterdam

You can see elements of the whole world reflected in Amsterdam. A bustling trading port over many centuries, this handsome city perched at the edge of the North Sea has drawn together the finest elements of European culture and much from further afield. Walking through its cobbled streets, you'll hear dozens of different languages, and you can dine on a different national cuisine every night as well as enjoying superb local cheeses, breads and beer.

Ride on a boat along the canals past the house where Anne Frank wrote her diary, visit the diamond museums to see glittering stones being expertly cut to shape, admire the works of the old masters in the Rijksmuseum and more, or take a cycling trip through tangled alleyways to find hidden marketplaces full of treasures. Travel Tips & Advice for Amsterdam

Amsterdam Activities

Cycling and canals play huge parts in Amsterdam’s cultural identity. Rent a bike and cycle along one of the many paths or cruise the waters in an open-air canal boat – our favourite way to take in the historic buildings. Embrace the foodie scene with professionally-led cheese tastings or guided tours of a microbrewery housed in a windmill. And take a piece of Dutch tradition home – you can buy tulip bulbs at Bloemenmarkt, a floating flower market.

Amsterdam Food & Drink

We guarantee one thing about Amsterdam: you won’t go home hungry! Any and all Dutch specialities can be found within the city limits from fries covered in mayonnaise, raw onions and spicy peanut sauce and deep fried krokets filled with ragout right out of a vending machine (yes, really) to tiny poffertjes covered in icing sugar and hearty mashed potatoes mixed with sauerkraut. And that’s not even mentioning the cheese – Edam or Gouda, take your pick.

Amsterdam Attractions

Amsterdam’s artistic heritage means there’s no shortage of museums to add to your list. Head to the Museumplein (Museum District) to see the world’s largest collection of Van Gogh and works by Rembrandt at Rijksmuseum. The city is also famously home to the Anne Frank House, a must-do when in the city – but book tickets ahead of time to avoid long queues. And for a hidden gem, step inside Ons’ Lieve Heer Op Solder a 17th church housed in the attic of a former merchant’s house.
