Far enough from Florence centre to feel remote, though close enough not to miss out; the stately home hotel of Il Salviatino is well-placed luxury and character all in one.

The scene is set from the moment you enter Il Salviatino’s gravelled car park, complete with carefully pruned shrubs and grand stone stairways, leading to what is a countryside manor as historic, luxurious and ornate as the best of them. The two-tier infinity pool adds a contemporary twist to otherwise ancient-feeling grounds, which themselves are surrounded by lush pine forests and those enviable, panoramic Florence vistas. Cocktails on the terrace, fine dining in the hotel’s classy - and formal - restaurant or treating yourself to a therapy at the spa, is about as strenuous as it gets at Il Salviatino. With a regular, complimentary shuttle bus ready and waiting to take you the 15-minutes into town, if you ever can take yourself away from such opulent surroundings, the highlights of this enchanting city will also not be missed.

    Dining

    • La Cucina is Il Salviatino’s tempting restaurant, where Tuscan delicacies are whipped up using produce from the organic garden, and abundant surroundings. Pasta dishes are given a contemporary twist, there’s always succulent meat and fish on the menu, and then the wine list is just as impressive. In the summer, pull up a chair on the picturesque terrace overlooking the gardens, and in winter, keep cosy in the library room where candelabra and smart portraits set the scene. Continue the evening at the Lounge Bar, and between April and September, a Pool Bar will keep hunger pangs at bay.

    New Schengen entry requirements (planned for November 2024 onwards)

    From November 2024, the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) will start for all non-EU nationals, including British nationals, travelling in or out of the Schengen area. The Schengen area is made up of 29 European countries, 25 of which are EU Member States. The EES is a digital border system which registers non-EU visitors travelling into the Schengen area instead of stamping their passports.
    You will need to have your fingerprints and your photo taken when entering the Schengen area. If you enter the Schengen area through Dover, Eurotunnel at Folkestone or St Pancras International, your fingerprints and photo will be taken before you leave the UK. You will also need to provide either your fingerprint or photo on exit.
    You may experience longer queues at borders when the new system starts.

    Passport Validity

    To enter Europe, your passport must have:

    • a date of issue less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it may have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago
    • an expiry date at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave
    • at least one blank page for stamping

    Room Types

    The long list of guestroom and suite options share the same high standards and aristocratic feel, with the main differences between them being the extra large floor plans, living spaces and view. Some of the suites in particular feel extremely grand, with high ceilings, antique leather sofas, a fireplace and even an in-room library, only adding to that special feeling. Modern touches come in the form of rain showers, Nespresso coffee machines and Wi-Fi, though in truth the history emanating from each space and natural comfort created by the finery of finish is far more important than any possible mod-cons.
