Built for the last Chief Minister of the Kandyan Dynasty, more than 200 years ago, this setting has the feel of a welcoming private house with the luxuries and service of a five-star, boutique hotel. Modern luxury meets traditional style at Kandy House, it was only recently renovated and so has superb facilities, yet the original features and wonderful architecture remain. With only nine highly individual rooms, there is the perfect mix of good company to meet on the terrace for a drink – perhaps a cup of fresh tea, or a favourite cocktail – but a distinct lack of the bustle of a larger hotel. An infinity pool is so much nicer when it is accompanied by peace and quiet, or perhaps just the gentle song of the abundant local bird life.
