Explore the delights of Oman – from stunning landscapes to its fascinating culture – on this tailor-made tour.
This week-long itinerary through Oman delivers just the right mix of luxury holidaying and authentic cultural experiences. Stay in a collection of 5* hotels and be driven around by your own chauffeur while exploring the sights and attractions of this Arabic country – from bustling souks and visits to local Bedouin people to nights in the desert and stops at ancient fortresses.Muscat
Say ‘hello’ to Oman as you touch down in the capital, Muscat. Here you’ll be met at the airport by your chauffeur and taken directly to your hotel base for the next few nights. We’ve picked The Chedi Muscat – member of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World collection – but if you would prefer to stay in a different property, please speak to our travel experts for alternatives.
Muscat
Spend the morning exploring Muscat on a private guided city tour. Your first stop is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque where you’ll have the chance to step inside the impressive marble-clad walls – highlights are the hand-loomed Persian carpet and the central chandelier made from thousands of Swarovski Crystals. Carry on to the Royal Opera House, the city’s premier venue for musical arts and culture, before driving along the Corniche stopping off at the Fish Souk and colourful Mattrah Souk, one of our top picks for souvenirs. You’ll also have time to visit Bait Al Zubair Museum, filled with a private collection of handicrafts and traditional weapons, as well as photo opportunities of the now ceremonial Al Alam Palace and Mirani & Jalali Forts, both dating back to the 16th century. One your tour is completed you’ll be returned to your hotel, with the rest of the day at your leisure.
INCLUDES : Breakfast
Muscat - Jabel Akhdar
Hit the road and head south-west to the ancient city of Nizwa. Take time to climb to the top of the 40-metre high Round Tower where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the city below, before descending to wander through the Nizwa Souk, where you can bargain for jewellery and pottery. Before embarking on the stretch of winding roads through the Al Hajjar Mountains, you’ll stop at the pretty village of Birkat Al Mauz where you can walk through the date plantations, then continue on to the emerald waters of Wadi Al Madeen. Then get back on the road heading to Jebel Al Akhdar rising 2,000 metres above sea level – this area is famed for its cooler climate, fruit orchards, postcard villages and the scent of rose water. You’ll arrive to your mountain-top hotel, Alila Jabal Akhdar where you’ll be welcomed by the aroma of frankincense and spend the next few nights – if you would prefer to stay in a different property, please speak to our travel experts for alternatives.
INCLUDES : Breakfast, Dinner
Jabel Akhdar
Perched on the edge of raving and blending almost seamlessly into its natural surrounds, the bold design of Alila Jabal Akhdar has been created using local stone and wood. While it would be oh-so-easy to rest and relax, either at the Spa Alila or beside the outdoor infinity pool with tremendous views, we recommend the Alila Experiences, tailored to you and centred around wellness, culture, cuisine, adventure and couples – strap on your hiking boots and explore the trails around the resort. The best way to end the day? We think its dinner at Juniper Restaurant with its Arabic-inspired menu, with especially good tagines.
INCLUDES : Breakfast, Dinner
Jabel Akhdar - Wahiba Sands
Today you’ll swap the mountains for the desert as you make your way to the golden dunes of Wahiba Sands. Get a taste of old Arabia with a stop at the Sinaw Market where locals come to trade goats and camels and where you can purchase jewellery and other trinkets. Your journey continues on with a visit to the old village of Munziff in Ibra before heading into Wahiba Sands, getting your heart racing – hold tight! – as you go dune bashing, stopping in time to watch the sunset from atop one of the sand towers. Your last experience of the day is a visit to one of the local Bedouin families where you’ll be welcomed with their gracious hospitality and learn a little about their life – then it’s on to your luxury desert camp where you’ll spend the night.
INCLUDES : Breakfast, Dinner
Wahiba Sands - Wadi Bani Khalid
Your day starts with another session of dune bashing as you head away from Wahiba Sands on a day trip to one of Oman’s most spectacular – and popular – wadis, the Wadi Bani Khalid with its inviting pools of emerald water. There is a small restaurant here but we think you’ll spend most of your time exploring the pools – we recommend swimming towards the upper ones which are quieter, passing beneath arches where light plays blue and green on the rock. You’ll be returned to your luxury desert camp where you can rest and relax.
INCLUDES : Breakfast, Dinner
Wahiba Sands - Sur - Muscat
It’s to return to Muscat but not without a few stops along the way! First up is the town of Sur where you’ll see the fish jetty and dhow factory where you can stroll through the yards and see how these wooden boats are made, before heading to the beach for a swim – or perhaps you’ll choose to take a dip in the Bimmah Sinkhole, an impressive limestone crater with water at the bottom. As you drive back along the coast keep your eyes peeled for sharks in the water or gazelle on land. Your last stop of the day is Wadi Arbayeen where you’ll have a chance to once again stretch your legs, returning to Muscat in the early evening. We have again picked The Chedi as your hotel for the night, but do speak to our travel experts if you’d like to stay somewhere else.
