Travel Tips & Advice for Tulum

Tulum Activities

Delve into the nearby Tulum jungle and you’ll find some of the area’s best cenotes – dive, swim or snorkel in these mysterious fresh water sinkholes and be rewarded with cooling waters and awe-inspiring views of the world above. Embrace the boho-chic attitude and start your morning with a yoga class or make like the stylish jet-setters who flock to the area and stroll the boutiques of Tulum Pueblo. Explore the bars and restaurants of the eclectic Tulum Beach Strip, spend a day at Xel-Ha Park snorkelling, zip lining and cliff diving or head to Akumal to swim with sea turtles and eagle rays.

Tulum Food & Drink

Adopting a simple yet delicious approach to cooking, food in Tulum is largely centred on traditional Mayan dishes and delightfully fresh seafood. The end result? Guaranteed authentic Mexican cuisine. Sit down to fish tacos and ceviche and don’t leave without trying cochinita pibil, a pulled pork dish marinated in citrus flavours and spices before being cooked in banana leaves. Keep hydrated with bottled water and for a grown-up tipple sip mescal – tequila’s smokier tasting cousin. Our top tip for eating out in Tulum – have cash with you as some local restaurants work on a cash only basis.

Tulum Attractions

Hanging over the Caribbean Sea, Tulum’s ruins are the remnants of an ancient walled city and home to the impressive archaeological sites of the temple-pyramid El Castillo, the Palace of Halach Uinic and a population of iguanas. For a less tourist-packed experience, get up early and be there right before opening. Travel inland to the remote ruins of Coba, a group of sites still largely unexcavated, to walk the network of sacbes (ancient white roads) and climb the Nohoch Mul pyramid. Back along the coast is the fishing village of Punta Allen known for fishing trips and dolphin spotting tours.
