Travel Tips & Advice for Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka Activities

Hovering above this beautiful island makes a balloon trip a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the landscapes from an unrivalled vantage point. Back on terra firma, you can head off on a mountain bike, exploring miles of trails through the island's forests where you can spot a variety of wildlife. The clear waters are ideal for snorkelling and diving, and when the surf's up you can ride the waves. Wind surfing, canoeing and many other water sports are there to enjoy.

Sri Lanka Food & Drink

Western food is available for those on holiday in Sri Lanka but the local cuisine is also delicious. Rice, fruit and spices are central to Sri Lankan food and tea is the main drink to accompany meals – though there are plenty of alcoholic options as you'd expect. Curries are a mainstay but there are many other local dishes to try, including string hoppers or very thin noodles, and roti, a type of flatbread. Street vendors sell delicious dishes though avoid unpeeled fruit and salads.

Sri Lanka Attractions

As a country with world heritage sites you will be spoilt for choice. Sigirya is on a rock plateau overlooking the jungle, the ancient site of a 5th century fortress, mysterious and unique. Elephants are part of Sri Lanka's landscape, and the Elephant Orphanage near Kigalle is home to orphaned or abandoned young elephants. It's a sobering but also uplifting experience. In the hill country, Nuwara Eliya is set among tea plantations and provides a cool antidote to the heat of the coast.
